I need computer help, please (Windows Live Udate won't leave me alone)

I don't think I've ever asked for computer help here before, but I'm having a really strange problem.
I am quite used to the little icon for Windows Live Update popping up and asking me to install stuff, and it has never misbehaved like this before. But right now it simply will not leave me alone.
I have "installed" security update KB979683 a bizillion times this evening. But after telling me it has installed it pops up just a minute or so later and asks to be installed again.
Is this a trojan horse of some kind, or am I running something that is preventing it from installing properly? What should I do?

LOL, hardly an “applebot”...I use both platforms and used to build my own PCs. Been five years on the Mac and I STILL haven’t found a negative, seriously, they just work. I have four mac products in the family now. One of them blew out a transformer and mobo a month before the warranty went out. Took it into the store and waited three weeks...they said they were sorry for the wait on parts and gave me a brand new iMac for my troubles. Can’t beat that. I dread the changeover to Vista on my work laptop. When OS-X asks if I want to update and I say no, it pays attention!

Simply right-click on the My Computer icon on your desktop, click Properties, click the Automatic Updates tab, then uncheck the box at the top. Click OK to save your changes. You can even go a step further and disable the Windows Update service: click Start, click Setttings, click Control Panel, double-click on Administrative Tools, double-click on Services, right-click on the Automatic Updates service, click Properties, set the Startup Type to Disabled, then click OK to save your changes. Nononono. Left click on Start->Programs->Internet Explorer, type in "www.apple.com/store", hit RETURN, and enter a new world where computers just work and are fun again.

Just out of curiosity, what version are you running?
Did you go into control panel/programs to see if the update is actually there?

Which version of Windows are you using? I’m just curious, I’m using Win 7 and just checked, no error messages.

Stop overselling the Macs. You guys convinced me to buy one last year. It’s sitting right here next to me, but it is not the one I am using.
For every problem it solved for me, it caused me a new one.

I run both platforms and I feel the same. My 2003 imac consistently out performs my current PC’s. That's why I still have a 2003 imac and none of my PC’s are over 18 months old.

I'm using Windows XP. I assume the troublesome update failed to download (not sure how to find it).
As I keep saying, I'm not a tecchie. I just hope whatever it was I did didn't hurt anything. At any rate, it seems to have taken care of the problem.

Have you rebooted your computer? Some updates won’t go into effect until you do.
To: driftdiver
I have XP and I kept getting viruses that would shut my computer down so it could “fix the problem”. Finally got the black screen of death and had to have my HD replaced. I just don’t know what to trust, since I know trojans appear as “Windows updates”

I rebooted my computer earlier tonight to try and get it to stop offering for installation. It still kept popping up.
After I did whatever it was I did, the block said "has failed to install." So long as I didn't discombobulate my computer, I'm satisfied.

Today very few viruses can penetrate a properly updated XP or windows 7 machine without user intervention.
Users who engage in risky behavior greatly increase the chances of a problem. Risky is defined as anything ‘adult’, anything focused on kids, or generally related to the top 10 searches of the day. Downloading anything from an unknown source is also risky.
Spam is also a source, I rely on an email filter which prevents 99% of the problems from avenue.
