I need computer help, please (Windows Live Udate won't leave me alone)

I don't think I've ever asked for computer help here before, but I'm having a really strange problem.
I am quite used to the little icon for Windows Live Update popping up and asking me to install stuff, and it has never misbehaved like this before. But right now it simply will not leave me alone.
I have "installed" security update KB979683 a bizillion times this evening. But after telling me it has installed it pops up just a minute or so later and asks to be installed again.
Is this a trojan horse of some kind, or am I running something that is preventing it from installing properly? What should I do?

LOL I see the little icon on my screen right now too and I updated earlier today. I'm just going to ignore it and hope it goes away.

Thank you. I followed instructions as best as I could, but when I typed "exit" and hit enter the window just closed, so I had no opportunity to remove any "tmp" files from any folder.
Not being a tecchie, I hope I haven't messed my computer up.

Simply right-click on the My Computer icon on your desktop, click Properties, click the Automatic Updates tab, then uncheck the box at the top. Click OK to save your changes. You can even go a step further and disable the Windows Update service: click Start, click Setttings, click Control Panel, double-click on Administrative Tools, double-click on Services, right-click on the Automatic Updates service, click Properties, set the Startup Type to “Disabled”, then click OK to save your changes.

You’re in my prayers - that’s about as much as I know about what to do with a computer problem. Pray.

Yes I said it. Because a guy posts a vanity asking for help and you applebots can’t resist throwing your digs in. get over yourselves, every product has its pluses and its negatives.

I’d like to get a a mac for the graphics but I really don’t have a lot of issues with the PC. I’m not swamped with viruses or any of the other supposedly common pc problems.

The same thing happened to me about a month ago. I downloaded Malwarebytes and fixed the problem. If you have another computer, download malwarebytes onto a memory stick. Connect your memory stick to the infected computer and open Malwarebytes. Let Malwarebytes do a scan of the computer and delete any bad stuff the scan finds. It took care of the problem for me. I googled the information from the supposed “update” and found the Malwarebytes solution from a techie online!

I've had Malwarebytes on my computer for three and a half months. That didn't keep this from happening.
As I said, I followed the instructions I found on the link to the best of my ability, and I hope I didn't mess anything up.
