NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. -- A pit bull terrier fatally mauled a 7-day-old baby Wednesday as the child apparently lay next to his sleeping teenage mother.
The mother, whom neighbors identified as Nicole Koezeno, 16, didn't discover Thomas James Carter Jr. was dead until a neighbor said she knocked on the mother's door and woke her around noon. Koezeno answered the door, then turned around and saw what had happened to her newborn son, neighbors told the St. Petersburg Times.
Neighbor Jackie Frishe, 19, said the baby had claw and puncture marks on his back and stomach.

I wonder if the pit bull owners will be posting happy hippo images and jokes in this thread.
Teenage mother sleeping till noon sure doesn’t make it sound like the child ever had a chance.
Not only sleeping until noon, but sleeping through the attack and death of her child who was sleeping right next to her.
She must have been stoned or drunk or both.
Do you have kids? Cause she was probably up a lot at night and was snatching a nap and I don’t blame her for that. I just wish she had woke up and her baby was alive.
Nah, the writer got it wrong....I’m sure this was a Golden Retriever....its always the Golden Retrievers not the pitbulls.
I hope not. There are certian breeds of dog that should not be trusted around small children. Dogs can become jealous of babies. Pits aren’t the only ones though, I have seen a Charpee become violently jealous of a new born, and it was put down before it could act. I would never consider owning a pitbull though.
She was probably partying at the local “Rap” club until 3am, lookin’ for a new babydaddy.
Sharpei’s, Pitt Bulls, it’s all the same.. FIGHTING dogs which also include Chow Chow’s and Rottweilers don’t mix with babies. I guess in this girl’s case, “It’s all good”. You play with the Michael Vick types, you get BURNED.
Dreadful. RIP.
Now that I can certainly agree with. Moms, even new moms, especially new moms, usually sleep much lighter, not heavier!
But this dog shouldn't have been anywhere near the baby. Such a sad story.
Oh boy, I misspelled the heck out of Sharpei, didn’t I?
You are right, though, it is the fighting dogs.
However, my friend did have his face bitten off as a small child by a golden retreiver that had been poisoned by a neighbor. The damage was severe, but surgery made it mostly undetectable.
I also had to have a Chow Chow that I adopted off of the streets of New Orleans put to sleep when it turned on me and bit me after I told it to go outside for latrine duties. I pointed to the back door, it fell over on its side in protest, I reached down to urge the dog with my hand gently, and then I knew what fangs in flesh felt like. Very fast, multiple bites before I could even react. This dog did display other temperament problems prior to this attack as well.
I read of a story where a Pomeranian killed a newborn. It doesn’t take a big dog to hurt a little baby like that.
When I brought the baby home from the hospital she slept right next to my bed and every noise in the middle of the night brought me wide awake.
My sister is dealing with my niece and her two kids right now. My niece isn’t a bad girl but she’s too immature to deal with two children and a teenage father who doesn’t want to deal with anything. They just moved into my sister’s house at 2 AM this morning and then planned to sleep all day today.
I guess I was different, I always loved kids and even volunteered to baby sit for infants as a teenager.
Congrats on babysitting duty. But it’s simply NOT the same as carrying a baby for 9mos and giving birth. Your body doesn’t bounce back that fast after only a week.
Wow! I would have never imagined a pomeranian could do that, but a 7 pound cat can do severe damage to a fully grown adult male human if it puts its mind to it. A baby is just utterly defenseless, it’s up to the parents to protect it, and now I am getting angry thinking that this girl left this baby around a damn pitbull while she was sleeping. >_<
