NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. -- A pit bull terrier fatally mauled a 7-day-old baby Wednesday as the child apparently lay next to his sleeping teenage mother.
The mother, whom neighbors identified as Nicole Koezeno, 16, didn't discover Thomas James Carter Jr. was dead until a neighbor said she knocked on the mother's door and woke her around noon. Koezeno answered the door, then turned around and saw what had happened to her newborn son, neighbors told the St. Petersburg Times.
Neighbor Jackie Frishe, 19, said the baby had claw and puncture marks on his back and stomach.

Sidon, a 90-lb male pit bull that attacked and killed a 7-day old newborn boy Wednesday is being held at Pasco County Animal Services in Land O' Lakes.
It’s not unusual for dogs to get cranky when they age.. Especially when deafness or blindness set in. They become unsure of their ability to protect/defend themselves and can lash out. This isn’t so bad if the dog is a chihuahua, but many of the FIGHTING dog breeds end up put down or in shelters because their owners become fearful of them. Another thing to consider before owning a dog.
I know someone who had a chihuahua that turned into Satan in his old age.. went partially blind and deaf.. poor thing was always on the defensive, bless his soul. But his owner understood this and never punished the dog. But if this dog had been a Pitt Bull, one has to consider the fatal consequences.
Happened back in 2001, I believe. The caretaker left the 6wk old just long enough to warm up a bottle and the dog attacked and killed the baby.
I would also like to address the concerns of those that don't understand why the mom didn't hear anything. Without being too graphic, it wouldn't take much for a dog that size to kill something that tiny. I've seen what a rat terrier can do with a mouse and it's quick.
I agree, gosh when the baby is week old you are tired but man o man, nerves are set on edge for every squeak from that precious bundle. Much less “sleep through” a pit bull gnawing on your baby next to you.
Stoned or drunk or both would be my guess.

Ah, the spectre of good Christian kindness appears once again...
Let's see, why would the teenage mother who gave birth only seven days ago be tired at noon? Maybe, like millions of other brand new moms, she slept when she had the chance.
I have experienced this as well. I had another Chow, a mix, named red dog. I also adopted this guy off the hard streets of New Orleans, however, he was much nicer than the other chow.
I had red dog for 9 years before he started to go down hill. He was basically just a big, red lump that sat on the carpet all day, but then he got bad cataracts, and started to go blind. As a result, anytime anyone passed him up, he would bite out at them as they passed, snapping teeth, but he would miss everytime. He just didn’t know who it was next to him.
This type of aggression was never in his personality prior to losing his sight. One time, while I was out of town, my mom had come to feed him, and he growled at her. This, sadly, was all I could allow.
She should never have been sleeping with the baby in her bed anyway. Infants get smothered that way. Why was he not in his crib?
I wonder if the pit bull owners will be posting happy hippo images and jokes in this thread.

I doubt it will take very long,,,
This woman mite have been on strong pain meds from giving
birth,,,
Very sad...
My children slept by my side for the first few months...I never would have slept, otherwise.
Poor kid; I hope the young couple can pull through this.
That’s where responsible fathers come in.
A responsible father would have gotten rid of the dog before the baby arrived. Or at least made sure that there was no way the dog would dog could come in contact with the baby.
Now its time for the loony hippo posts to start. To hell with the fact that a pit killed another child...
Was that how it was when you had a newborn?
Mine did—all three times. Didn’t take me long to realize that if I slept when the baby slept life was fine.
I think her age (Maturity, responsibility, etc) had more to do with it than anything else. I wonder where her family is?
It didn’t matter if I was 23, 26 or (”honey SURPRISE!”) 36, if my sons whimpered, I was awake.
It IS the mother’s fault. I don’t need to know “the rest of the story”. I’ll bet she’s a hip-hop white girl without a clue but I’m sure that’s changed now. Too late.
You are a blithering idiot...Judge Jury and executioner with out a brain in your head and no evidence for your opinion....Bet you also think OJ was innocent.. :O)
Hey, no personal attacks here on FR, unless they’re aimed at public figures. They’re fair game. (By the way, I knew O.J. did it the morning Nicole’s body was discovered. Who else had the motive? That was a crime of passion. She was nearly decapitated. Only someone with an emotional investment would’ve done that, and O.J.’s “search for the REAL killer” never occurred and for good reason— HE DID IT).
By the way, people.. Read the article. It states that the mother answered a knock at the door and THEN noticed her baby was mauled. Wouldn’t the normal response be to acknowledge the baby PRIOR to answering the door? WTF?

Wow...very un-FReeper like response. Vulgar and crude.
You must be new around here.
I feel bad for the baby but let me just say...a 16 y/o mother, a trailer in Moon Lake, and a pit bull in the house will rarely end well.
It’s a tragedy from the get-go.
