Memphis Girl Mauled by Pit Bull: Family Wants Dog Euthanized
Reported by: Kevin Holmes Email: kholmes@myeyewitnessnews.com Last Update: 7:58 pm
SHELBY COUNTY, TN A Memphis child was mauled by a pit bull while inviting her friends to her birthday party. The 8-year-old girl is recovering at Le Bonheur Childrens Medical Center, as authorities decide what should happen to the dog that attacked her.
Shelby County Sheriffs Deputies say the dog was chained to a tree in a front yard on Northdale Drive when it got loose.
Hailey King has undergone several surgeries to repair her hands, face, legs and shoulder. Late Saturday, April 10, 2010, she was unable to move one arm and her mother Eileen says she can barely move the other one.
Kim Shreve managed to help free Hailey from the dog.
When I looked down in the cove," Shreve tells myEyewitnessNews.com, "there was a little girl and she was balled up in the fetal position and a large brown pit bull was on top of her and mauling her. She was covered in blood.
After this attack, Eileen King wants the pit bull to be euthanized, but theres a chance that wont happen. Right now the one-year-old pit bull is under observation at the Memphis Animal Shelter.
If Shelby County Health officials consider the dog not to be vicious, it will be returned to its' owner. And that's an option that angers both Shreve and King.
Its not like you can tap the dog on the hands and tell it not to do it again," says Shreve. "The dog drew blood."
King agrees. This is vicious," she says, "and that dog needs to be put to sleep.
The dogs owner, LeToya Redwing was cited for having a loose dog. The Shelby County Sheriffs Office says this incident is still under investigation. Additional charges could follow.
There was one study that said Pitbulls, Rotweillers and a third breed, I don't recall the breed, are responsible for about 75% of the fatal dog attacks a year.
BTW I don't recall advocating breed specific legislation.
Mine was twenty; they might be cheaper now, that was several years ago! I got it at home depot.
"Oh my goodness me yes! I am berry berry sure it vas a Peet Bool Dog dat bited me on de leg!"
The Perro de Presa Canario is a large Molosser-type dog breed originally bred for working livestock. The name of the breed is Spanish, means "Canarian catch dog," and is often shortened to "Presa Canario", or simply "Presa." The breed is also called Dogo Canario, meaning Canarian Molosser.
So what you're saying is: If you run into an Islamocommunist hippo, you're screwed.
Depends on whether the hippo’s in heat.
“Sleeper hold”.
Had it used on me once by the ex.
My sweet, pacifist Minny jumped off the sofa and against his back, just as I was “going out”.
[contrary to popular opinion, everything goes gray, not black]
Actually, you can go into any farm supply store and buy a cattle prod fairly cheap.
They come in several lengths.
I’d say a 4 footer would be most practical.
The extra benefit is that if the owner gets “upset” about you zapping the attacking dog, you can nail him, next.
They both survive it and learn valuable lessons.
“Like you said, nail the owner when they attack.”
The ultimate cure.
Being in jail takes away the whole “thug bling” appeal.
Sorry about the below the belt comment, it was unlady like. :O( but only for that comment....luck with your dogs hope they turn out well for you....
all I can say is this:
Thank God housecats don’t weigh 100 pounds like dogs
and thank God those mean tempered little nervous wrecks somebody named after a blood soaked Mexican state ain’t the same weight as the much maligned and oft feared Pitbulls
for those who fear Pits so...
Go any Bulldog breed...and other guard style dogs too....
Amen.
a world of lapdogs and sunshine labs only would suck
That was an irrational response.
The *only* time my current Dobe ever snapped at me was the night I rushed him to the weekend ER vet where, after a battery of other tests and x-rays, he was diagnosed with Lyme disease and in great pain.
When I awoke him by petting him, it caused the inflammation in his neck [from the Lyme] to hurt him and in his groggy half-awake state, he snarled and snapped at me.
Within 2 seconds, he was all apologies and remorseful kisses but I *knew* instantly something was very wrong with him, physically.
When he hopped off the sofa and walked around, he started yelping, randomly.
Within minutes, we were on the way to the vet.
One shot of Prednisone for the inflammation stopped the pain [even though he never acted anything less than polite and affectionate towards me or the vet the whole time] and he was happy and trying to ‘suck up’ to the female vet techs, as usual.
In fact, now that he was fully awake, the vet couldn’t even duplicate a “vicious” reaction from whatever was hurting him, even by fiercely wrenching his neck and spine around, hence the x-rays.
Two months of Doxycycline halted the Lyme.
Personally, I couldn’t live with guilt of wondering if I’d murdered my own loyal dog without at least giving it the benefit of a medical exam.
A tattoo artist we knew had 2 Rottweilers.
He always warned people to not touch the male as he was “vicious”.
While the artist and hubby chatted, I managed to get hands on the dog and although he did growl and snarl, it was obvious it was not aggression but agony.
I pleaded with the guy to get his dog to a vet but he didn’t listen.
A few months later, the dog died of the agonizing bone cancer that Rotts are prone to.
He wasn’t “savage”; he was suffering.
She may have killed an innocent but ill/hurting dog.
“She had three children all of single digit age”
Triplets?!?
“He’s back...” carries the same significance of “the sun rises in the morning”.
Obsessively predictable.
You hoochie, you.
[LMAO]
God, what a cute little kid!
“They never made the news.”
The good I do is never remembered; the bad, never forgotten.
OMG....the killer dog dragged a severed human arm into the baby’s bed!
