Memphis Girl Mauled by Pit Bull: Family Wants Dog Euthanized
Reported by: Kevin Holmes Email: kholmes@myeyewitnessnews.com Last Update: 7:58 pm
SHELBY COUNTY, TN A Memphis child was mauled by a pit bull while inviting her friends to her birthday party. The 8-year-old girl is recovering at Le Bonheur Childrens Medical Center, as authorities decide what should happen to the dog that attacked her.
Shelby County Sheriffs Deputies say the dog was chained to a tree in a front yard on Northdale Drive when it got loose.
Hailey King has undergone several surgeries to repair her hands, face, legs and shoulder. Late Saturday, April 10, 2010, she was unable to move one arm and her mother Eileen says she can barely move the other one.
Kim Shreve managed to help free Hailey from the dog.
When I looked down in the cove," Shreve tells myEyewitnessNews.com, "there was a little girl and she was balled up in the fetal position and a large brown pit bull was on top of her and mauling her. She was covered in blood.
After this attack, Eileen King wants the pit bull to be euthanized, but theres a chance that wont happen. Right now the one-year-old pit bull is under observation at the Memphis Animal Shelter.
If Shelby County Health officials consider the dog not to be vicious, it will be returned to its' owner. And that's an option that angers both Shreve and King.
Its not like you can tap the dog on the hands and tell it not to do it again," says Shreve. "The dog drew blood."
King agrees. This is vicious," she says, "and that dog needs to be put to sleep.
The dogs owner, LeToya Redwing was cited for having a loose dog. The Shelby County Sheriffs Office says this incident is still under investigation. Additional charges could follow.
Hippos or pitbulls?
"Sallie, a brindel bull terrier, joined the regiment as a puppy in the early days of the war. Through it all, she provided a source of comfort, pride, and inspiration for her fighting comrades. Sallie would hold her position on the line and bark fiercely at the enemy. One thing was clear; a bond of unconditional love and loyalty existed between Sallie and the men.
At Gettysburg, the gallant little dog became separated from her unit in the confusion of the first day's battle. Refusing to pass through the Rebel lines, Sallie returned to her unit's former position atop Oak Ridge, staying among her fallen comrades, licking wounds of the injured and watching over lifeless bodies. Days later, after the Confederates retreated from the field, she was found weakened and malnourished, amidst the dead and debris. A compassionate soldier recognized her and returned Sallie to her unit. No doubt, the reunion was joyful!
Miraculously Sallie had avoided being shot at Gettysburg, but on May 8, 1864, the same day Captain Keenan was killed; she was shot in the neck by a minie ball. After being examined at the field hospital, a surgeon pronounced she would live but the bullet could not be removed. After a few days recuperation at the hospital, she returned to the unit with the painful and annoying wound, eventually becoming a battle scar. Upon reporting for "active duty" she felt it necessary to tear the seat out of the pants of a young soldier from another unit running away from the battle line as he crossed along the back of the "Old 11th."
Fatefully, Sallie was in her usual position on February 6, 1865, at Hatcher's Run, Virginia, when a bullet struck her in the head, killing her.
Heartbroken over the loss of their beloved mascot, the men buried her on the filed of battle under heavy enemy fire."
as are horses and cattle.
I saw a 60 year old woman knock out a "pit bull" by simply twisting its collar.
It was down and out lickety-split.
Not quite as manly perhaps, but effective.
Dogs bites don't make the news. Dogs that maul and kill people do make the news. Mostly that's Pitbulls.
Miami Man Dies After Dog Attack; Second Fatal Attack In 2 Weeks
MIAMI — A dog has fatally mauled a South Florida resident — the second fatal dog attack in less than two weeks.
Miami-Dade police said Pablo Fleites was found dead last night in a dog pen. Inside the pen were two boxers — a 5-year-old male and a 6-month-old female puppy.
Police said Fleites was attacked by the older boxer that was covered in his blood. The dogs were taken by animal control.
I would have to find the list of fatal maulings by dog breed. I believe Pitbulls were number one on the list.
People and their dam pitbulls. A perfect target for lawsuits. They are all wonderful friendly animals until they bite someone. Yeesh.
I forgot about that one. Good point. It will absolutely choke the dog, dead if necessary.
"The Jowls of Death"
Good idea. I happen to have one of those. It uses several D cells. Interestingly, it is not as bright as my $4.99 Office depot led light that is about four inches long and uses three AAA batteries.
I honestly cannot remember the last time I bought a battery larger than AA.
All dogs are all wonderful friendly animals until they bite someone. Yeesh back at ya.
Sure, the list makers are all confused, Pitbulls and Chihuahua are tough to tell apart.
Mine was very dim until I bought the LED insert...That made such a difference! Plus the batteries last twice as long.
You can buy an upgrade?!
How much?
