ET breaks news that actress Dixie Carter, best known for her role as Julia Sugarbaker on the hit sitcom "Designing Women," has died. She was 70 years old.

"This has been a terrible blow to our family," her husband Hal Holbrook tells ET. "We would appreciate everyone understanding that this is a private family tragedy. Thank you."

In addition to Holbrook, her husband of nearly 26 years, the actress is survived by her two daughters Mary Dixie and Ginna.

My husband’s family are distantly related to Dixie’s family on his late wife’s side of the family.

I am distantly related to Dixie’s family----through Adam and Eve! /s

She really was quite beautiful, the kind of class act most of us (women) would aspire to be - yes, including here in the northeast.

I wasn’t sure if she was a Republican, though. I thought another actress on the show was Republican. I may be confusing the stories, or is it possible there was more than one Republican on a long-running TV sitcom? Amazing!

FlJoePA, clearly, what golden bear is saying is that his mother and sisters are not hetero.

"Not there's anything wrong with that", of course.

Ooops! I meant Grizzled, not Golden, Bear.

Hate it when that happens!

What is your freakin’ problem? GB said no offense intended and explained what was meant by the post. You act like it’s the worse thing ever posted on FR.

Yep! Delta Burke and her husband (Major Dad) is conservative Republicans too. Yes the show was produced by two Clinton supporters, but they obviously did not care what the actors’ polical background was.

Oh, I know she wasn’t FROM Atlanta, but she Hal was and they spent a good deal of time here. I do believe they lived here for a while too. I know we would see her around town. And during Designing Women she represented Atlanta women.

To Thumper - Please accept my apology; I hadn't intended my comment to turn into this!

To FlJoePa - I never said Dixie Carter was gay. But most Hollywood Screen Writers are. I understand how my comment could be misunderstood as directed at her. It was not intended to insinuate she was a lesbian. However, the gay community had a bizarre fascination with the show.

About ten years ago, when I was stationed in Europe, I was flipping channels on American Forces Network (AFN). They were showing a documentary about Designing Women. They showed some kind of "gay convention" where a lot of guys wearing dresses recited the "Night the lights went out in Georgia" speech. I changed the channel to The Oreilly Factor. It wasn't much better.

Incidently, we ALL need to make our peace with The Lord. We have all fallen short and are guilty.

Outlaw Woman - Thanks for the support!

She was a class act all the way. Dixie, I’ve never met her was 4th cousin to my Step Daughter on her momma’s side.

It was on the news last night as we went to bed, and in The Commercial Appeal this morning.

Same here, but I knew who she was - she seemed like a class act.

No, they were hetero. They were women with female attitudes and interests. One of my sisters was also a "Culture Club (Boy George)" fan. I don't believe there are very many male hetero Boy George fans. Do you?

Dixie Carter was a feminine conservative. I think gay men are drawn to dignified feminine images. Maybe they have the normal attraction, but the "same sex attraction disorder" has twisted the natural attraction into a desire to become what they are drawn to.

Oddly enough, my mother and sisters were hard core liberals.

There's going to be a very confused FReeper named "Golden Bear."

She was an incredibly graceful woman, everything about her reminded you of a better time, a more civilized time. She will missed.

You come out of nowhere with some strange comments about you hoping she makes her peace. Screw you. Who are YOU to judge her?

Well, you're judging Grizzled Bear, so I would say the same of you.

This is a thread honoring the passing of a well-respected actress. I saw nothing 'wrong' in what he wrote. A little off-topic perhaps, but not wrong. And he gave his condolences. This is not the place to pick a fight, so just drop it.

That being said, I'm saddened, as always to see someone well known and who had the respect of many pass on. May God's grace be with her and the family. Prayers to all.

I recall an episode of NCIS that runs frequently where Hal Holbrook was a guest star. He did a bang-up job as always, but turned out to be the villain. I wasn't aware he and Dixie were married.
