"This has been a terrible blow to our family," her husband Hal Holbrook tells ET. "We would appreciate everyone understanding that this is a private family tragedy. Thank you."

In addition to Holbrook, her husband of nearly 26 years, the actress is survived by her two daughters Mary Dixie and Ginna.

What a gift she was. Very feminine and classy. She was on a talk show once and mentioned that she always wore stockings to church and didn’t like when she saw women who didn’t. She was a cut above.

I think I am going to purchase new stockings and try to dress more like the lady she was. By the way, Michelle Obama is the opposite in that she refuses to wear stockings, even to the most elegant and important affairs of state. No class, no class.

She also always called hubby by his whole name - Hal Holbrook - I think initially because there was another Hal in the family. (I think). Maybe someone knows the reason and can clarify. Trivia that stayed with me.

A terrible loss. Prayers to her family!

I think it was her father. Here is what my step daughter had to say, she is Dixie’s 4th cousin on her momma’s side.

‘I think her father (also named Hal) and Nana (grandmother of step daughter) were first cousins. We got to meet him when we went up there that time with Nora (aunt of step daughter). He had some great stories about Nana.’

Unless it is extremely cold I wear dresses or skirts with stockings to church. It is the respectful thing to do.

Thanks for finding the article. I’ve sent it to my step daughter, and will print it out to put in the family archives.

You are welcome, Gail. I don’t know why the information was kept from the press for so long. Bless their hearts - they are in mourning, and wanted to keep matters private, I am guessing.

Probably. Even the distant family didn’t know about the cancer. Step daughter’s uncle Ken was buried last week, he would have been Dixie’s 3rd cousin.

NY Times says it was complications of endometrial cancer.

Sometimes it shock. Even when death is expected it is still a shock. Been there with both my parents cancer, and a child who only lived 33 days. Four times with sudden unexpected deaths with my son, late husband, my grandmother and grandfather. It leaves you not thinking straight.

And when you are famous, information needs to be controlled it seems.

Thanks for the clarification on Hal Holbrooke! I remembered it from an interview and thought it was quite funny! He seems like a great guy.

Your opinion.

As with all “opinions”, well, you certainly know the maxim.

Now, since you have insisted on continuing this exchange it is now you who has become “argumentative”. I received and responded in kind to Mr. Grizzled Bear. I believe he and I have come to an amicable resolution. Therefore, your input is no longer needed nor wanted by me and “we”.

Got it?

Again, Mr. Grizzled Bear, as far as I am concerned, you and I are “good”. I do hope that any further exchanges between us is conducted in a spirit of generous comraderie and good will. I will certainly do my best to see to it that that is the case. As I am sure you will.

Yours in solidarity,
FReegards,
Thumper

RIP

Hollywood Republican (not the most conservative one I guess but that’s still much better than 90% of hollywood)

I’ve not seen much of “Designing Women” where I know she ironically played a flaming feminazi.

But I know her as Mrs. Drummond from Diff’rent strokes (until she was replaced by a different actress). As I recall in one episode she made some dig about Jimmy Carter.

They are saying it was cancer.

I wonder if Dixie Carter was related to Jimmy Carter? I remember that June Carter (Johnny Cash’s wife) was.

Yes, I’ve now seen your response to Grizzled Bear. It happened as I was posting mine and didn’t see it at the time.

Got it?

He had to have been if a classy independent Lady like Dixie loved and stayed with him all these years. You know how often they marry and divorce in hollywierd.

I did too when my husband told me about it. I don’t follow the holywierd crowd, or music crowd, can’t tell you who did what. Unless like Crowe you make dumb remarks about using 1 sheet of TP. They are not that important in my world.

It’s weird how so many famous people (and Presidents especially) are distantly related to each other.

IIRC Obama is descended from King Longshanks.
