ET breaks news that actress Dixie Carter, best known for her role as Julia Sugarbaker on the hit sitcom "Designing Women," has died. She was 70 years old.

"This has been a terrible blow to our family," her husband Hal Holbrook tells ET. "We would appreciate everyone understanding that this is a private family tragedy. Thank you."

In addition to Holbrook, her husband of nearly 26 years, the actress is survived by her two daughters Mary Dixie and Ginna.

Good grief. This is no place to pick a fight. Back off and take a breath.

We eagerly await your response.

Cancer can be so fast a family doesn’t have time to “prepare”.

Actually, lots of the time you cannot “prepare” for a death. Even though you know it is coming, it is a shock.

And some cancers are so very fast the person is gone in weeks.

I notice southerners don’t mention cause of death often. It is just the way we do things. Privacy.

Bravo, Bravo! I can hear the staccato voice of Julia Sugarbaker while reading those words.

It does take me back to when there were some good, clean, humorous things to watch on tv.

Thansk for posting that!

Family news travels faster than the media, even if it is distant family. Step daughter (4th cousin) called her dad to let him know.

It was up on Wikipedia first, but since I don’t trust them, I checked further. Then it was on news 5 in Memphis on the 10 pm news, and in The Commercial Appeal this morning.

“I don’t believe there are very many male hetero Boy George fans”

I’d think there had to be, or else they would not have been a huge hit and thus icon of the ‘80s.

As to your comments - you are a class act in handling the over-the-top reactions. I tended to disagree with your TV assessment, but I understood your “make peace” comment. Everyone, even the best saint, needs to make peace with the Lord.

My sister's boyfriend said that she was the only reason he went to the concert.

Again, I understand how my comment could be considered "offensive." I had intended it as social commentary; this wasn't the appropriate place for that.

There's going to be a very confused FReeper named "Golden Bear."

lol, yes indeed. They haven't posted for ~ a year, tho.

I knew what you meant, GB, you just left the opening when you failed to say 'hetero, and male'.

Sounds as if it was sudden. So sad.

my husband's and my reaction this morning was that it might have been suicide or accidental overdose? because of the wording of her husband's statement and the privacy sought.

I hope that's not the case of course, but either way it's a sad loss for her family.

Another thought is that if the report up thread of someone seeing Dixie Carter at an oncology office is correct(have no reason to doubt it), it may have been her wish that no one outside of her family was privy to the knowledge that she was ill.

I can think of nothing worse than having people suddenly treating you differently because they know you are going to die. A fighter does not want pity. A fighter fights and part of that fight is to carry on

If that is true then her family would respect her wishes in death.

We are all human in that we have this curiosity about such things. I know I am guilty.

Whatever the reason, may she Rest in Peace and may God comfort her family. She brought smiles to millions of people.

This is no place to pick a fight.

Who was picking a fight?

Back off and take a breath.

I will take your advice under consideration.

Speak for yourself...

I always do. FYI, there happens to be more than one of us at this particular location, although *I* am the one posting.

Again I will take your advice under consideration and give it the weight it deserves.

To Thumper - Please accept my apology; I hadn't intended my comment to turn into this!

Not a problem. I, too, offer my apologies. May all of us get better at posting clearly and concisely. Myself, especially!

Who was picking a fight?

I quote: "I am so happy you've diagnosed a significant portion of the American population thusly. I had no idea you were such a distinguished, learned and astute expert in the field of human sexuality."

Your sarcasm was argumentative and beyond what the post actually stated.

Speak for yourself...

I always do.

I quote: "May we humbly request...We eagerly await your response."

Not in this case. "We" is inclusive.

I realize that Grizzled Bear has graciously apologized. Unnecessary, IMO. But the fact still remains, your post and those of a few others, went beyond his in terms of rudeness on a thread such as this. Grizzled Bear has given his apology. Your doing the same would show an act of humility...

As I apologize to all, for my intrusion.

I thought it was produced by Linda Bloodsworth Thomason and her husband. I’m pretty sure Holbrook is a liberal. Not 100% ‘cause I was surprised that Dixie was.

Yes, Delta is a republican. She’s married to Gerald McRaney. He’s very conservative.

Oh, I understand the shock of someone dying, no matter how long the illness, or how elderly the deceased. I’ve never quite figured that out, how we react at being told someone’s passed when they’ve been at death’s door for months. But from personal experience, I know that that shock is very different than the shock of being told someone who you were with and appeared perfectly healthy yesterday has just passed.

But in either case, you have people who have PR agents. Typically, they’d have prepared a statement in advance, much as newsrooms have bios/obits prepared for anyone of note even as they live and breathe. And the statement that was put out by Mr. Holbrooke seemed to indicate that his wife’s death came as quite a total, out of nowhere shock.

This is an emotionally charged subject and my post was offensive. Even though I hadn't intended to offend, my post was not appropriate for this particular article. The truth is, I was mostly reminiscing about how my mother and sisters loved that show. I was the only guy in the household and really didn't "get it."

bcsco, in post 115, Thumper graciously accepted my apology and also apologized. I believe Thumper's response was amplified due to understandable outrage. My initial comment looks pretty callous. Thank you for your support, all is well now.

FNC reported one hour ago, that Dixie Carter died from uterine cancer. This article says she died from complications of endometrial cancer:
