NAUGATUCK A 30-year-old father is fighting for his life after being run over by a sport utility vehicle Tuesday in what police are calling a road rage incident.
Anthony "T.J." Parente, a Naugatuck native who lives in Ansonia, was in a medically induced coma and listed in critical condition at Waterbury Hospital on Wednesday, a day after a Jeep Grand Cherokee ran over his chest as he lay on the side of the road, police said.
Police originally thought Parente had just a leg injury because his internal injuries were not immediately apparent on Tuesday. Parente's family and friends, who have flocked to his bedside in the hospital's intensive care unit, said the injuries are far worse.
A major artery in his leg was severed, he has eight broken ribs, a collapsed lung and three cuts on his liver. His hamstring and quadriceps on one leg are twisted about 180 degrees, he lost a liter of blood and he has tire marks on his chest, said Parente's mother, Amanda Parente of Naugatuck.
She said doctors put him in a coma because he has breathing tubes in his mouth that he might try to pull out if he were awake.
"The doctor said he was lucky to make it through last night," she said Wednesday, trying to fight back tears. "They say the first 48 hours are the most critical. So we're hoping and praying, but we have faith because T.J. is a fighter."
Parente is unmarried and has an 8-year-old daughter. He was recently laid off from a manufacturing job working with steel, family members said.
On Tuesday, he was driving his motorcycle toward Naugatuck from a cell phone store on Route 63 around 4 p.m. when he was struck and run over, police said. He had been involved in an altercation on the road with 66-year-old Alan Harte of Watertown, according to police. Police said the two were swerving in and out of traffic.
Evil SUV alert!/s
This is what happens when two idiots meet. When I read stuff like this, I’m often reminded of the words of one of the smartest people around- Judge Wapner would always ask, “Why didn’t you just drive away. Why didn’t you just leave?”
Any more news on this? The only thing I got out of this is that the two dummies were going in and out of traffic, and the guy on the motorcycle lost in the end.
Anyone from that area?
Never bring a motorcycle to an SUV fight!
