Seems like an interesting issue for evolution: "I don't have any use for oxygen, but my progeny will die without it."
I'm having a hard time seeing how this would evolve via incremental steps.

Recall, dear reader, that conventional theory postulates that Earth’s early atmosphere had no oxygen in it when life developed. When poisonous oxygen appeared (due to plants?) the existing life had to adapt to oxygen or die. Apparently, some of these original organism’s descendents are still hanging around.
