13 Glaring iPad Shortcomings

It's Awkward You can't carry it on your hip like a phone, so it presents the same portability issues as any laptop - you'll need a case of some sort to protect it and carry the power cable.

It's heavy To be sure, at 1.5 pounds and with all this functionality, the iPad is an impressive feat of engineering. But it's simply not light enough

It's slippery We might ignore the awkward size and weight, but the iPad is also slippery, and its aluminum back is ever-so-slightly slightly concave.

The screen has too much glare The iPad has the same glossy screen as Apple's Macbook Pro laptops and iMac desktops. Unless you're reading in a very dim room, the glare will be noticeable and can be distracting.

Forget reading in the sun If you thought to take your iPad along for an outing in Central Park or at the beach, forget about it.

Fingerprints are annoying

It does not multitask The iPad runs the same operating system as the iPhone, and as a result has all of the iPhone's limitations.

The browser is limited The iPad also uses the same limited Safari browser that's found on the iPhone

The virtual keyboard stinks

There's no USB port

iPhone-only apps look horrible Apple boasts that many of the 150,000 apps already available on the iPhone will also work on the iPad

The price is just too high

$499 is just the beginning, a low-memory model that will fill up too quickly for anyone with a big music library and/or an appetite for video.

It doesn't replace anything

There was lots of talk about textbooks on the iPad back in janurary. I think they’re going to get there. If they’re available through the condole on amazon then you can get them now as there is a kindle app for the pad.

You were saying ...

ipads are more hype than hoopla, hows that for a fact

Thanks for providing me with the example on this thread of exactly what I was saying ... LOL ...

[ ... in case y'all didn't see, I said, "However, they are usually woefully short on the facts and more expressive of their negativity, than anything else... " ... LOL ...]

ahh star, you can keep on but nothing ever changes with your story. You think apple can do no wrong. You worship their every bead of sweat.

I think they are just another company that caters to a mostly liberal customer base. They make some good products and some crappy products.

I don’t think it will fly.

But not because it isn’t a good idea, it is a great and brilliant idea.

The problem is, school textbooks are a major scam. Major.

They won’t give that up. But I know for sure...textbooks will be a killer application for me if one can bookmark and annotate with comments.

I would hate to be a text book publisher or any one else producing dead tree publications.

The iPad won't put a dent in their incomes, but this will.

I put together a slide show from iPhoto, selected the music I wanted, and tucked it under my arm. We went off to the family gathering for easter dinner.

There are cheaper digital picture frames. Some even have apps and connect to the internet, all for less than $200.

It is not designed to be a “standalone” computer... The need for 3G would be very important to serious road warriors, who travel to remote areas.

I see a problem here.

What Apple should have made is a focused content-creation device similar to the Courier mockups, with pen-input in addition to capacitive touch.

Karl Rove loves his iPhone

Karl Rove is a conservative?
Who knew? He sure has managed to keep that a secret all these years.

I guess you missed it, when he came in with President Bush, eh?

No that just shows that not even Rove or Rush are perfect. Everyone makes mistakes.

Except... they don't think it's a mistake... doncha know ... LOL... It's funny, but neither do all the FReepers here who have bought one -- and have been using it.

Very odd indeed, eh?

but my biggest problem with Flash is that 99% of all Flash content is annoying advertisements

Huh?
I use Flash for practically all my videos on the internet, including the essential viewing sports clips from NBA.com, Fox Sports, MLB.com, as well as Youtube and practically all my favorite old TV series like the Lone Ranger, Bart Masterson, The Twilight Zone,Alfred Hitchcock Hour, The Flintstones, Bewitched etc and all these classic TV series that I really love in addition to all the movies I watch online. I need Flash. Why would anyone give up Flash just so he can use some Apple feminine hygiene product with no USB port, which is less useful than any Toshiba laptop which only costs $350 and has Flash, a webcam, USB ports, as well as a keyboard, a great 15.4 screen, and runs the over a million Windows 7 applications?
These Flash pop ads you are going on about..there is something called pop-up blockers, and most sites I visit don't play any welcoming video unless I click on the videos to play it. There is no way 99% of my or anyone’s Flash videos are ads. But hey, don't let me stop ya from spinning Steve Job's propaganda will ya?

Look, I don't particularly dislike Rove, he has a lot of political skills (as well as his faults), but he ain't no conservative. To an extent, I would put some of the blame for our 2008 losses on him and Bush. Not all, but at least some of it.
