Apple Sells 300,000 iPads on First Day
The Wall Street Journal ^ | April 5, 2010 | Kerry Grace Benn

Posted on 04/05/2010 6:44:39 AM PDT by myknowledge

Apple Inc. said Monday it sold more than 300,000 iPads in the U.S., including preorders, on the first day the device was available.

The company didn't give a precise figure, but the tally was below the estimates of some analysts.

Buyers flocked to stores starting Saturday after weeks of publicity about the tablet-style computer.

Apple hadn't offered iPad sales forecasts, but over the weekend, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster more than doubled his initial first-day sales estimate to between 600,000 and 700,000 units, including preorders, based on longer-than-expected lines at stores and high expectations for online preorders. He had also lifted his 2010 forecast to 5.5 million units from 2.8 million.

No one sends me any flash attachments. And I wouldn’t open it if they did. I usually, on my Firefox browser on other (Linux) computers, run with NoScript plluggin. So if I run across a site that is flash based it doesn’t display well. And if it’s a site I don’t know, let alone trust, that’s the last they see of me.

And flash really does suck.

Hulu would be stupid not to...

Hulu has already shut down many ways of getting their content, especially if it has the possibility of getting anywhere near a TV.

Foxconn is a Taiwanese company, but they do have plants in China.

And Apple did shut down US manufacturing.

That’s funny. I hook my laptop up to a TV via the RGB port all the time and watch Hulu. Did the same thing for my GF’s Sony VIAO laptop. Since it runs winders I was able to remote control it with the Logitec Touchmouse iPhone app, and corresponding winders app, and stream hulu shows.

Works great!

You were saying ...

And Apple did shut down US manufacturing.

Okee-dokee... let's all go out and buy that American-made computer...

As I said, I'll stay away from the China-slave-labor camps, but certainly, if you wish, do buy those American-made computers ... LOL ...

I hope you're not holding your breath too long for it to happen ... :-)

You're comparing an ipad and Christianity?

Anyway, I was referring to the nutty San Franciscans who avoid reality as a way of life.

you ignore the advantage of good software...and hardware integration.

Some people like to be locked in to a limited platform, and others prefer freedom and having the platform trust the user.

And then... there's the American consumer who buys things that work for them ... LOL ...

Apple does like to specialize in products that "work" for people... ya know...

This from the person who said Apple is "a good American company, who has been around since the 70s".

Well, if you discount where they actually make their products, then they are "a good American company."

Ummm.., I think he was referring to his use of some Christian reading materials on his iPad as not avoiding reality -- as a way of life, doncha know ... :-)

Well, in case you haven't noticed... Apple has been in California from the beginning ... LOL ...

But, as I said, feel absolutely free to buy that "American-made computer" ...

Get back to us when you find it ... LOL ...

Unless you want to run that windows-only application or plugin, or use that printer, or other device that only has windows drivers.

Of course, you could always install Windows yourself on the machines, but that's not "just working".

Apple does it's thing, but they weren't the first to make a smartphone, mp3 player, tablet computer etc. They also have their limitations, bugs, and defects built in to pretty much every product. What they excel in is the marketing capability of taking hold of the media when they release a product, and gathering a content-development base to work with them.

Yep, they choose to ignore that possibility for now. There are many set top boxes (like BoxEE, Playon, PS3, and Wii) and browser platforms (like Kylo) that hulu has blocked in their quest to make people watch their content through standard stations if it shows up on a TV screen. For some reason though HTPC's and laptops with TV-out don't bother them.

I can't imagine someone wanting to run crapware, but if they do... all they've gotta do with their Apple computer is get "Parallels" and run their Windows application right in the same window as all the other Macintosh programs... what a deal!

But, you're right, having to run "crapware" from the Windows platform is not "just working" and so I do sympathize with the people who find themselves in that mess... :-)

Apple does it's thing, but they weren't the first to make a smartphone, mp3 player, tablet computer etc.

Nope, they weren't the first ones to make it... just the first ones to make it work right, the way the consumer wants ... LOL ...

I do and that’s on windows and Linux machines. I like the idea of a “native” HTML video tag. No plugin required. Why do you have a problem with such a concept?

So you would agree that Apple computers aren’t American made?

Maybe you would also agree that they have shown liberal bias in their iTunes store podcast selection?

Maybe you would also agree that they are left-leaning in general, exemplified by putting Al Gore on their board?

I do too. Unfortunately, the browsers are battling it out over Ogg Theora and H.264. Why? Because H.264 is patent-encumbered, which would make it illegal in open-source browsers like Firefox. Of course, Apple is the main one pushing for H.264, since it would have the one-two punch of being hardware accelerated on its mobile platforms and getting Mozilla-based browsers out of the way, paving the way for Safari to take more marketshare.

The whole world is using Flash for cry out loud. I’ve had no problem with it and like I say that’s really the only problem I have with Apple.
