I hate Vista but this new computer won’t run XP without major changes. I’ve had to reformat and start over twice in about 6 months. I never had any major problems with XP. I’m not about to try Win 7 and find out that my software and hardware programs don’t function properly.

Went from Win 95 to Win 98. Stayed with 98 till XP SP2 came out. Tried ME and had so many BSOD’s I went back and stayed with 98 till migrating to XP Home. Yeah, 98 had blue screens too, but not near the number as Win ME.

Didn’t care that much for XP Home. Was still plagued with with too many blue screens and went to XP Pro. I’ve reformatted only once since XP Pro. And that was after installing SP3. SP3 did too many things I didn’t like. Graying out the timers in the Display Properties/Power Scheme and some other nuisances irritated the heck out of me.

After the last re-install, when I do the Windows Updates, I stay away from SP3 and all the XP Updates and just downloaded the XP Security Updates and my system is right where I like it...Stable and BSOD’s are a very rare occurrence.

Win 2.0 to Win3.11 was a big jump.

The real alternative back then, for those who don't like toy operating systems, was OS/2. But it didn't fit with Mr Bill's business plan.

Can anyone tell me why my Office 2003 Professional is now, after years of validation and upgrads by MS, now being deemed "not genuine?"

Just my luck, I bought a Dell computer with Windows Me in 2000, and when that crashed in 2006, I bought an eMachine with Vista. Once I bought more RAM and turned off all the graphics, bells, and whistles, it looks just like Windows 95 and runs fine.

I was big into OS/2. Went to the OS/2 BAUG from 94 to 96, we had some big time speakers there

Bad driver support, particularly in print and Northbridge drivers. Poor performance. Glitchy virtualization and compatibility modes. Annoying security manager. Poor SDK's for developers leading to some really crappy ports for existing software suites.

I was truly impressed with Win7 though. Zippy performance on even older machines, seemed to come packaged with every driver ever released for anything, fewer clicks for common admin tasks (VPN/wireless setup, account management, policy management), and it feels a lot "smoother" than Vista.

My dos centavos.

People don't like being kicked off the top of the learning curve.

Why'd ya have to move everything, MS?

Remember if you upgrade your ram or swap out hard drives or switch your NIC cards, Windows will treat it as if you installed the software on a brand new machine and did not pay them their "royalties"

AHa!

Thanks for the clue. I am treating this latest from MS as a reportable scam and have taken steps with the AG office. This is the same as buying a car, changing the plugs, and as a result, then being forced to buy a new engine.

It seems that the development team knew what needed fixing, and had Win7 going pretty quickly.

The Vista debacle smells an awful lot like it was simply a product that was rushed out the door before it was finished cooking. I think Win7 is what Vista was supposed to be.

I saw my first copy of “Longhorn” while working for AMD. Our WHQL certification guy was working over time trying to keep up with all the changes and patches.

It was a pretty ugly process.

Of course, working with the Suse folks was no picnic either...

Unbelievable. All that work and extra expense, and all you wind up with is a serviceable Windows 95 computer.

But it runs about 20 times as fast as my old Windows 95 computer.
