And it is amazing! UPS was here at 9 AM sharp! I am truly a beautiful device. I'll be twittering at @ipadhacker about my experience with it.
You should rethink that, especially if you're a MS fan.
Apple participates in quite a bit of Open Source software, uses open standards throughout their OS, software and hardware (OpenGL, TCP/IP, USB, Bluetooth, Firewire, Ethernet).
The only thing that's "closed" is the option of running MacOS on non-Apple hardware, which is Apple's prerogative. It does have the beneficial effect of ensuring a great user experience, since the limited universe of hardware is well tested and almost all bugs flattened.
Check out Apple's open source page, it's contributed a lot in the software world. MUCH more than Microsoft.
Of course not, nor will it ever be. Always room for improvement, eh? I'd like to see 1000 DPI displays, myself. ;-)
"My wife loves her Kindle.... best practical thing I've given her (insert wisecracks). It's a book reader, not a gaming device.... and there are plenty of free books on Amazon if you check regularly... and I can synch my laptop with a Mac version of the reader."
I was just reading there's a Kindle app for iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad, so all that Kindle content is available there too. =)
PLUS all the new iPad content, of course.
"We're old farts and anything above Pong is too much for us... lol."
You don't like movies either? Wouldn't it be nice to read illustrated books and see color pictures? Then there's web browsing, which you obviously use.
"The battery life on the Kindle is extraordinary, as long as you turn off the wireless feature."
The battery life for the iPad looks pretty darned good as well. Twelve hours of movie viewing... :-D That far exceeds every laptop of which I'm aware.
Don’t forget, Apple also now owns/controls CUPS (Common UNIX Printing System) and has cleaned it up quite a bit.
Are you able to get Google search on an IPad? Thanks
Just coming into this thread late in the game, but since no one answered you... it would be, "Yes you can."
It has all the Internet stuff, i.e., for Internet web browsing, and you can just go to google.com. Or, as it's the same kind of "set-up" as the iPhone and the iPod Touch, those two have the Google search in the menu bar of the webpage. You can actually choose either Yahoo or Google for that, in your preferences.
Otherwise, you can go to any search site that you want, via going to the correct webpage (using your bookmarks, doncha know...).
How do you hold it and type on it at the same time?
If you want to put it on a table, it has a stand. If you want to put it on your lap, you can do it that way, too. If you want to hold it, you can use it like people do with the iPhone, also.
It's quite versatile and can be done several different ways.
ALSO, if you want a physical keyboard, you can plug the device into one of those, too... :-)
You've got a whole bunch of choices for however you want to use it...
Except that it cant do all the things a Lap Top can do.
Well..., silly you..., if you want or need a laptop, you just get a laptop, doncha know ... LOL ...
Business idea...looking for investors...A remote keyboard and support device to plug an iPad into.
It's already there... LOL ... Apple already thought of that one... :-)
Could you let me know if my books are available on it?
You can check with the publishers and find out. I hear they're all signing onto the iPad.
But, if you've got the book on PDF format, that can always be done that way, too.
No USB ports????
WTH is the point of the thing then?
It's a wireless device.
You can download from the Internet or from your own home and what you've got there (and transfer it over to the device). There's no problem getting your pictures and your e-mail and your movies and your calendar and your contacts, your books, etc. and etc. -- all over on that device... :-)
Apple is not interested in making things easier for the user. Their job #1 is to make money.
Actually, Apple makes money by making things easier for the consumer... that's how they've figured out to make money, doncha know ... :-)
but an iPad (a touted replacement for a laptop) limited to this is just plain nuts...its their non-open system mentality.
I listened to the Jobs conference when this was first introduced (not when it was first sold, but back when it was "introduced") -- and one of the point he made was that this was not a laptop and it was not a bigger iPhone (or iPod Touch).
So, if "you" are classifying it was a replacement to a laptop, you're mistaken, because -- right off the bat -- Jobs made that perfectly clear, that it wasn't.
I'm not sure where you got that idea (perhaps listening to some FReepers who were misinformed on the matter, I suppose...).
You probably have to go through Itunes to get stuff loaded like the other Apple Products.
Can you watch youtube on it ?
How are you liking that iPad?
I just got back from the Apple store [I already have 5 Macs] and had a chance to look at it.
I was really surprised at the public’s interest in the iPad. The store had 3 tables set aside for iPads and it was jammed for over an hour that I was there. I counted about 200 people in the store, statistically more for the iPad than any other device.
The kids were cranking on it. They appeared to be liking the touch qualities. I watched 4 little girls and 1 little boy monopolize units to play games. No learning curve.
I really, really want to wait for the next version. Not sure I can. I’m waiting for the 3G.
Thanks.
Can you watch youtube on it ?
First take a look at the iPad on Apple's website.
Then you can see the features page ...
And then, the one that directs to this feature ...
That seems to be what Ive been able to gather. My impression in reading articles, etc. that is if you want to get something loaded on it, you need to get it from Apple like on the iPhone for APPs.
No, you don't have to get things only from Apple ... LOL ...
Yes, they do have apps for the iPad, and yes, you can (if you want) download songs from the Apple Store, or get videos (movies and TV shows) from Apple iTunes Store... but that doesn't get in the way of you putting your own stuff on there.
Your own photos that you've taken (or anyone else's photos or even web photos or images you've downloaded) can all be put on the iPad. Your own movies that you've taken or anyone else's can be put on there.
Movies from DVDs that you have can be put on there. Movies and/or shows from TV programs can be put on there. Downloads of movies from the Internet can be put on there (or any other kind of "show" on the Internet).
Songs that you have (i.e., your own music collection from your CDs) can be put on there. Your e-mail is on there, your documents that you've written (or that someone else has written) can be put on there. PDF books and/or files (i.e., just ordinary PDF documents) can be put on there.
And, of course, your own calendar (several different ones, and you can specify which calendars to see or all of them) can be put on there. And your contacts book can be put on there.
Then you've got the interaction of all these different things as they all work together, on all these things of your own that you have on there.
The iPad is quite a versatile device... :-)
Whatever this iPad is, it doesn't seem to be something I want, even if it has a bigger screen and an do less than my iPhone.
