Dress Deemed Too Short, Revealing On Top:
OXFORD, Ala. --
A high school senior in Alabama was suspended for wearing a prom dress that school officials said was too short at the hem and too revealing on top.
"I was so excited because it was my senior prom and I'd never been to a senior prom, so I was excited," Oxford High School student Erica DeRamus said.
DeRamus said she knew her school had dress code policies, but didn't think her dress would violate them. But when she got to prom Saturday, officials told her it was too short and too revealing.
"What cleavage? That's exactly what I said. I wasn't trying to be rude or anything, but that's what I feel," DeRamus said.
"If I felt it was too much cleavage in this dress, I wouldn't have purchased this dress," said her mother, Darrie DeRamus. "It would have stayed in that store and I wouldn't have even gotten it off the Internet and paid for it."
But principal Trey Holloday said it violated school policy stating that dresses cannot have cleavage falling below the breastbone or hems more than 6 inches above the knee.
"And so that expectation in our community is that it's there for protection of kids and not for management of kids," he said.
Erica's mother said she was never notified of the prom dress code.
But Holloday said all parents and students were told about it not once, but three times.
Of the 352 students who attended prom, 18 violated the policy, he said. Seventeen of them chose to be paddled, while DeRamus chose a three-day suspension, Holloday said.
"We're too old to be paddled," Erica DeRamus said. "This is high school. We are seniors. If you're going to act up, give us another option besides getting paddled, because this is not the 1940s. We don't take corporal punishment now."
"The thing that I would say is the difference between patience and tolerance," Holloday said. "They're young and sometimes they make young people's mistakes and we're very patient when those things are made, including this. But we're not tolerant of bad behavior or defiance."
Seems to me paddling is an accepted form of discipline in that school district. I wonder about the number of them that accepted the paddling. Don't know how perverted it is. May only be working on the "spare the rod, spoil the child" principle. And everyone there knows it.
I was barred from my homecoming dance. No suit. I would have dropped out before I’d let them paddle me, though.
How is a particular breast size in any way, shape, or form, ‘terrible?’ This young woman was born with an ample set of mammaries, yet everyone raises a fracus when a woman displays a bit of cleavage.
I saw the photo. The dress wasn’t that bad, especially by today’s standards. Let’s face it, people, we’re not living in the Victorian era; it’s time we let people be themselves, select what they want to wear—I mean, if she’s 18, she’s an adult, regardless if she’s attending high school or not—and stop demoralizing others by using weird measurement standards to justify the passing of dictatorially-centered rules by very mentally-ill people.
That’s right. I said mentally-ill! Whomever passed those rules regarding the sleeveless tops for women—measured to within inches—of the top of the shoulder? Sheesh! GET OVER YOURSELVES!
People who quibble over such matters are, in my eyes, mentally-ill. They have deep-seated, psychological problems centering around the need to control; also involved is the ego-centric element of ‘needing to be seen as ‘being in charge.’’ — Ergo: When people with this type of mental illness obtain positions of power in a high school setting, they become fixated on the ‘fact’ (in their own mind, it’s fact!) that the school rules they created, or helped create, are ‘Canon!’
In the minds of the mentally ill types discussed above, ‘Canon,’ as with its use in the religious context, must *always* be accepted as the prima-facie evidence of Correctness, Properness, and Objective Truth. There is no room for argument with ‘Canon,’ or those who believe that they possess the ‘one and only truth.’
I went to a public high school in Michigan, in a town of 3,000 people, from 1980 to 1984. All the girls in the high school who were cheerleaders, wore their cheer uniform skirts on game days (usually Fridays) or before and during pep rallies. No one was corrupted by seeing young, athletic girls showing a bit of muscular leg, or the under-skirt panties during their high kicks, either at the pep rallies or at the football games.
We all graduated, got over ourselves, and became, more or less, upstanding citizens who went on to live our adult lives as best as we could muster.
Michigan is primarily a conservative state, save for maybe Ann Arbor or Traverse City. Ann Arbor being the home of the University of Michigan (the town has a nude bike ride event, for crying out loud)—our ‘little hotbed of liberalism.’ Ironically, many school teachers come out of this place, so I don’t really get it in this case; however, this story isn’t about Michigan, but a Very Southern State.
We of the Northern States see our Southern Cousins as a bit backward in some respects, making mountains (no pun intended) out of molehills. Or, in the case of this poor girl’s mother—she wishes her daughter’s double-d’s *were* molehills...I guess, anyway. That’s how it seems to me.
She was born ‘ample.’ This isn’t a problem for anyone except, as I see it, ‘Males In Authority and The Women Who Stay Home, Barefoot, Pregnant, and Love Them,’ who want to place their own particular, twisted, mentally-illness-laden values upon an unsuspecting public, then, when someone, Heaven Forbid, ‘runs afowl’ of the ‘rule,’ then ‘Hey! You can either accept paddling or get a suspension.’
I’ll just say that if anyone ever threatened to strike my child in any way, shape, or form, they’d be laid out flat, unconscious, and hauled away in an ambulance. End of Story. You don’t go around hitting children with paddles. It is barbaric, and is only contained within the realm of those who lack any amount of consideration for others, their persons, or their property.
Madam. Love your daughter’s DD breasts, encourage her to become everything she can be, and please rally against school ‘officials’ who vehemently attempt to coerce and force upon adult-youth (18 and your an adult, people!) such barbaric practices such as the choice between punishments.
No such thing should have been given out at all. As to defiance? If we hadn’t have defied English Rule, we’d all still be subjects under ‘Good Ol’ King ‘enry!’ That school needs to fire the entire lot at the top, and repopulate it with people who won’t be so nitpicky about sleeve and skirt lengths and light midriff baring (when one lifts their arms up? Give me a break!), and, instead, get some people who have Minds Of Their Own and a healthy respect for others.
