I am able to reboot but it keeps locking up. I can launch a browser but it goes nowhere. Firefox or IE. I was able to run defrag. I delete some old files and the first ones would delete then it would lock up.
I have System Mechanic 7 (iolo) which I do not like. The real time anti-virus you cannot turn off. I tried to remove but had problems with that. I was using System Mechanic to run daily clean ups and to recover ram.
Had an old game I was able to remove.
I can reboot but have had to pull the plug to restart. I have AVG-Free which should run ever night.
Check your add on’s & plug ins. My firefox started locking up and acting nuts after the last update and it was due to the add on’s not working right with the new updated firefox.
Before you do anything else install the Microsoft Memory Diagnostic on a disk or CD-ROM and boot from it. You can find it here:
http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp
Bad ram will produce all of the random symptoms you describe.
Once you have verified that you have no faulty RAM, boot Windows in Safe Mode by hitting F8 repeatedly after rebooting the machine and selecting “Safe Mode” from the list. From there I would run System Restore and go back to a date before any of your problems occured.
Good luck.
At the hip...
Check your add ons & plug ins. My firefox started locking up and acting nuts after the last update and it was due to the add ons not working right with the new updated firefox.”
Uninstalled Firefox and it still happened. I think I’m answering my own question here...and Klemper has it right...this has to be a hardware problem.
Thanks for the advice.
You may have a redirector malware directing your
homepage to a nonexistent one. CTL-ALT-DEL to get the
task manager and see if iexplore.exe is in your process list.
Also run regedt32.exe and see what
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-2115134065-938482983-829235722-31056\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\Start Page
points to. If its not the defualt home page of your choice
maybe your browser has been hijacked.
I had similar issues.
Of all the things I tried, McAfee Stinger seemed to resolve it.
http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/
A new Stinger has been developed to specifically target “FakeAlert” threats being seen in the wild. This version of Stinger Detects and removes the following “FakeAlert” Variants - Kryptik, AVP Security, Fakespypro, Winwebsec, Antivirus Soft and XPSpy.
Try temporarily disabling and turning off AVG to see if that fixes the problem.
Yous guys are slack'n.
That's easy. Go to www.medical-advice.com and post your thoughts about the latest political news, then come back to freerepublic and see what people have posted concerning your toe fungus.
If you think it’s browser related / Try bugzilla.
I just ran system restore but it does not seem to help. Need to check CPU fan. I think video is on the board. Things just lock up. Cannot get tax manager to restart, pressing button for hard reboot does not work. I hav eto pull the plug.
Avast is another good free anti-virus if you want to try to uninstall AVG.
Did you ever say how old this computer was? Laptop or tower?
You could try using a linux live-CD. That should tell you whether it’s a windows/virus problem or hardware.
In any case, backup any important data you may have on the PC.
Trust me. He's never wrong.
Can it be downloaded and saved to a floppy or CD ROM. The browser on the bad machine will not go anywhere. IE or Firefox. Click X to close the browswer and it sits there. Takes 3 clicks to shut down with task manager.
Desktop and it is probably 6 years old.
If this can’t fix it,
http://malwarebytes.org, I don’t think anything can.
Has it ever been cleaned out with canned air or anything?
Have you ever had the power supply replaced?
