A phobia is “irrational” in the sense that you limit your activities to avoid even the most unlikely chance of encountering the feared object. It’s not irrational to run away when you see a snake, but it’s irrational to refuse to walk near any patch of grass for fear of seeing a snake.

Interesting factoid (or maybe just an urban legend) for those suffering from arachnophobia: You are never more than six feet away from a spider.

Yikes!

there’s a big difference in an healthy respect of a full sized anaconda or rattler and having a full blown panic attack around a little ribbonback.

Unlike the fiery sting of a rattlesnake bite, the bite of a coral snake feels as faint as a pin prick. Sometimes people don’t even know when they’ve been bitten, Gennaro said.

The venom is also insidious, working its way slowly through the bloodstream, gradually numbing nerves. A victim’s inability to keep his or her eyes open is the first sign of poison, but it can take an hour or two for that poison to set in. When it does set in, the victim suffocates from lung paralysis.

Actually, I was thinking of you, my dear. With fondness. I’ve not been in your chair ... yet.

You have Alektorophobia: The Fear of Chicken

Chickhen on a plate, on a grill or even in a bucket I can deal with, but having one of those critters walking around anywhere around me...I can look at it logically and I tell myself, it is only a chickhen for Christ's sake. But the second one appears, I run away, screaming like a little girl, pissing my pants as I go.

Coulrophobia. Very common, indeed. Surprised it didn’t make the top ten.

A friend of a friend has a phobia of alligators. She lives in California, where there’s clearly no danger of them. It’s completely irrational. If they get a magazine, her husband has to go through it to make sure there’s not a picture of an alligator anywhere in it. The logo on an Izod shirt will set off a panic attack. She’s on meds and goes to therapy, which has helped a little. It sounds funny, but to her and her family it’s no laughing matter. It’s a debilitating mental illness.

Had my mother in law from New York City visiting us last fall. She saw a big furry spider in the backyard and was certain that it was poisonous. I told her that I looked on the Internet for an entomology site the year before and found that there are no venomous spiders in this part of the country that she's got to be worried about, but that the spiders we do have are harmless even though they can sometimes look very frightening. We do have black widows, but they are easy to spot and so are their webs. 'Don't worry mom', I said, I make sure there's none of them in the garage so there won't be any inside the house.

Couple days later our Siamese kitten was scratching around a sand pile in the backyard and wouldn't leave it alone. He was sure that something he wanted was in there. They shoo'ed him out of there and found a baby Great Basin rattlesnake coiled up in the sand pile. Mother in law went through the roof.

I guess I forgot to mention to her that we do have rattlesnakes here, but my assurances that we've never had one in the backyard before wasn't satisfying to her.
