Today's American Minute is about a variety of Americans, including some Supreme Court Justices and other Judges along with someone named Rufus King (someone I did not know know about) and some of their efforts to end slavery in America....some of whom were founders of the Republican Party. (More information to debunk the myth that the Democratic Party should be given the allegiance by those who oppose slavery in this country and those who want all Americans to be treated equally with no regard for racial prejudice.)

A good read since I knew nothing of this information.

There is a high school in Milwaukee named after Rufus King. Thank you for telling me who he was.

Supreme Court Justice Joseph Story helped establish the illegality of the slave trade in the 1844 Amistad case.

The foreign slave trade into the US had been illegal since 1808 and was classified as a species of piracy. Although we had to wait till the Lincoln administration to actually hang one of the pirates.

The Amistad case established that international law meant that all slaves transported from Africa were legally free.

Cassius Marcellus Clay, diplomat to Russia for Lincoln and Grant, founded the anti-slavery journal True American in 1845 and helped found the Republican party in 1854.

This caught My EYE!
When I was a kid, the Great Olympic Boxing Champ Cassius Clay (obviously named after this Anti-Slavery hero)became a member of the Nation of Islam and changed his name to Mohammed Ali.

The supreme irony is that in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, there were probably Thousands of SLAVE CATCHERS and SLAVE TRADERS who bore THAT VERY NAME.
