A good read since I knew nothing of this information.
Pinging you to another informative American Minute.
Will respond later tonight to any comments.
Maybe some of you already knew about Rufus King. I did not.
Enjoy!
Rufus King: “I hold that all laws or compacts imposing any such condition as slavery upon any human being are absolutely void because they are contrary to the law of nature, which is the law of God.”
Amen!
There is a high school in Milwaukee named after Rufus King. Thank you for telling me who he was.
The foreign slave trade into the US had been illegal since 1808 and was classified as a species of piracy. Although we had to wait till the Lincoln administration to actually hang one of the pirates.
The Amistad case established that international law meant that all slaves transported from Africa were legally free.
This caught My EYE!
When I was a kid, the Great Olympic Boxing Champ Cassius Clay (obviously named after this Anti-Slavery hero)became a member of the Nation of Islam and changed his name to Mohammed Ali.
The supreme irony is that in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, there were probably Thousands of SLAVE CATCHERS and SLAVE TRADERS who bore THAT VERY NAME.
Just sayin'.
