ABBA, Jimmy Cliff, Genesis, The Hollies and the Stooges will become the latest inductees in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Monday, officials said.

Other inductees this year include individual recipients of the Ahmet Ertegun Award -- record executive David Geffen and songwriters Jeff Barry, Otis Blackwell, Ellie Greenwich, Barry Mann, Mort Shuman, Jesse Stone and Cynthia Weil.

An induction ceremony is set for Monday night at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York.

Thanks for telling me who Jimmy Cliff is. I have never heard of the guy, which tells me the R&R Hall of Fame is an absolute joke.

Who will be inducted next year - Debby Boone and Barry Manilow?

What about Pat Boone? Has he been inducted yet? (I know he's in the Gospel Music Hall of Fame). Aside from his questionable fling with heavy metal, he does a long history of hit records.

"You’re letting fashion cloud your judgment."

Actually, I'm letting the fact that I've always believed that ABBA sucks cloud my judgment.

He had a lot of hits but they all came in about a 6 year period.

You still didn’t say what flaws songs like S.O.S and Mamma Mia have. Melody, vocals, production. All first rate. They’re better than a lot of show tunes.

ABBA made brilliant pop records. What qualities do you look for in pop music that their best records didn’t have? You’re letting fashion cloud your judgment.

But this is the Rock and Roll hall of fame, not the pop music hall of fame.

I don’t understand why progressive rock (whatever that is) is poo pooed by the electors.

I never much cared for progrock, but it is waaaay more rock n roll than ABBA.

‘treacle’ means something that meanders slowly and goes nowhere. ABBA specialized in consice 3 minute pop songs that ‘moved’. Their production was highly influential on everyone from Elvis Costello to contemporary dance music bands.

Sorry, but I can't muster the intestinal fortitude for a thoughtful, time consuming discussion of ABBA.

In fact, I feel a bit foolish to have spent the time I already have on such a ludicrous topic.

Totally agree that there is crossover between rock and pop. But that is a far cry from saying that all pop music is rock. And clearly, not all rock is pop.

Pop music is a general term encompassing virtually all music that isn’t notated art music (Classical).

Someday Jan Wenner will die. Maybe someday after that the Rock Hall won’t be a joke.
