Peter Graves was an elegant, classy man that conducted himself as a gentleman on and off of the screen. Both Peter Graves and James Arness were great family men and were good to people around them. No scandal sheets with Peter Graves or James Arness headlining them.

Yes, James Arness is still alive. I absolutely adore James Arness..I admit to being a Matt Dillon and Gunsmoke junky!
I’ll take Ham on five, hold the Mayo.
Mine too. Saturday mornings just wouldn't have been the same without that show.
Yeah, I loved watching Gunsmoke in the ‘60’s & early ‘70’s.
I used to get chided by a few of my high school friends for even watching that show.
I miss those good westerns.
Peter Graves and Jim Arness: Brothers on TV By: Roger Friedman // Monday March 15, 2010
Peter Graves died Sunday age 83. He was the gray haired, suave, deep voiced star of the Mission: Impossible TV series on CBS from 1967 to 1973. Graves was also the younger brother of James Arness, who was Marshall Dillon Gunsmoke on CBS from 1955 to 1975. They were probably the only siblings ever to star in simultaneous long running hits on any network. Arness, 87, is still alive. http://showbiz411.blogs.thr.com
Graves has loads of credits besides MI, but his long running role as Jim Phelps left an indelible impression. He took over as the shows lead after married actors Martin Landau and Barbara Bain bolted the series over a contract dispute. Graves stayed til the end and even starred in a reunion series in 1988. Nevertheless, he was never asked to do even a cameo in any of the three big screen adaptations of the series with Tom Cruise.
My favorite Peter Graves performance: as the stone faced but hilarious Captain Oveur in Airplane! and its sequel. His co-star was Lloyd Bridges, the late father of newly minted Oscar-winner Jeff Bridges. Whatever you do, dont call either of them Shirley.
This was Atomic Monster weekend, and so screened the otherwise forgettable “Then” - and we noted several ‘stars’ who got their first break in these B movies.
Peter had a starring role. And we did get the ants in time.
SOmetimes you see so manyodd things in the old movies, like how bad the aiin LA was in 1958...
RIP Mr. Graves, you were the best. Prayers for the Graves family.
“Yeah, but have you ever been in a Turkish Prison?”
No, but have you ever hung around the gymnasium?
Surely, you can't be serious.
The movie was “THEM”
I thought his best role was that of ‘Security’ the German spy in Stalag 17
My respect for him grew when he got angry that they were making Mission Impossible into yet another anti-American movie where the spy agency were the bad guys. He was not a stupid Hollywood lefty.
“I watch gladiator movies at the gym. :-)
Surely, you can’t be serious.”
I am serious. And don’t call me Shirley.
Oh and would you look at this ... Scraps is a boy!!!!
Scraps : Grrrrrrr.
I know ... mixing Airplane I and II.
I can’t help but laugh at many episodes of Mission Impossible simply due to Airplane. Not laugh “at” since I like the show overall. It’s just that Graves, on occasion, may say something in MI that could easily be taken in an Airplane context if you know what I mean.
It’s kind of like watching older movies where Leslie Nielson or Lloyd Bridges are playing characters and acting far too serious (The Poseidon Adventure and Rocketship XM come to mind for those two men).
Seriously, we all can hopefully agree that Peter Graves “surely” leaves behind a fine body of work for all of us to enjoy.
“Do you like Gladiator movies”??
Rest in peace
“Isn’t James Arness still alive? RIP Mr. Graves. I loved watching Mission Impossible.”
I believe you are correct about Mr. Arness.
Fury, The Texas Rangers, and Sky King.
Rest In Peace, Mr. Graves, and our prayers are with your loved ones. Thank you for making such good use of your God-given talent.
Ya, too early to post.
Of course, later in the day, I’m all grumpy.
