Over the last five years, Israel has automated it's security along the Gaza border. Vidcams, with magnification and night vision capability, cover much of the border where Palestinian terrorists try to plant bombs next to Israeli patrol routes, or to try and get through the security fence.

The Gaza security fence is not just a fence, but a network of sensors for detecting Palestinian terrorists attempting to cross, or set up bombs for use against Israeli patrols. The Israeli border with Gaza is 51 kilometers long, and most of it is in desert or semi-desert terrain. For a long time, most of the border was patrolled by troops in vehicles, while parts of it, near gates, were also guarded by manned watchtowers. But the Palestinian terrorists have been persistent in attacking the fence, and trying to get through it. None have ever succeeded, and survived. But the patrols were often attacked. One Israeli soldier was kidnapped four years ago, and some are killed each year.

The solution has been a system of unmanned towers and vehicles. The Sentry-Tech pillbox towers were developed six years ago. These are unmanned, armored towers, about 15 feet tall and six feet in diameter. At the top of the tower is an armored shelter that conceals a remotely controled machine-gun. This technology is similar to that used for many armored vehicles. The tower also contains vidcams, and other sensors. But the remotely controlled machine-gun has a vidcam that can see at night and the ability to enlarge and enhance the image. A radar system has been added, which is turned on when it gets foggy. The operators are at a central location (and are mostly female soldiers). If intruders are detected, one of the soldiers at the control center, opens the top of the tower and brings out the machine-gun. The 12.7mm machine-gun has a range of 2,000 meters. Some towers use a 7.62mm machine-gun, with a range of 800 meters. Allowing for some overlap, 16-17 of these towers can cover the entire Gaza border. Dozens of Palestinian terrorists have been killed trying to reach the areas guarded by the towers, and many more fled when the remote control machine-guns opened up.

In addition to the towers, remotely controlled armed vehicles have also been developed, to reinforce the towers or patrol areas where there are blind spots. Four years ago, the AvantGuard vehicle was introduced. This one used sensors and software that enabled it to patrol along planned routes, and was capable of some cross country operation as well. The AvantGuard mounted a remote controlled gun turret equipped with a 7.62mm machine-gun. The vehicle had digital cameras facing every direction, and used pattern recognition to identify potential threats (like people sneaking around where they are not supposed to be), or obstacles on the road. The idea was that a pair of human operators could control a dozen or more AvantGuard vehicles. This system was particularly effective at night, because it had night vision and moved quietly. Weighing only 1.3 tons, the AvantGuard was protected against rifle fire and fragments from shells and roadside bombs. AvantGuard was adequate for guarding industrial parks, but not the vast stretches of Negev desert, along the border with Gaza.

Building on the AvantGuard technology, another firm later developed the Guardium. Using the same TomCar vehicle, and remote control turret, the Guardium has better sensors and software. Guardium is pitched as "smart" enough to be used in urban areas, and to serve as an emergency response vehicle. That is, these would be stationed along isolated stretches of border, ready to drive off to deal with any terrorists who had gotten through the fence. The Guardium would thus arrive before a human quick reaction team, which would be stationed farther away.

But for most of the Gaza security fence, the fixed cameras can cover everything. The female troops that monitor the video or radar work four hour shifts, as staring at a screen does wear you down.

If the Israelis could keep out Palestinians with these security fences, why can't the United States keep out illegals along the U.S.-Mexico border using the same Israeli technological innovation? Just asking.

The Saudis have a similar security fence.

We should use similar technology to guard our southern border.

Think of how many illegals would be kept out of the United States had this security fence be erected by now.

sorry but if you think in terms of our current administration, the proper wording is:

“think of how many potential votes this wall would obstruct”

“think of how many true believers (muslim terrorists) would be deprived of their 73 virgins if they never came across”

what in the he11 is wrong with our government?

There are Orange gates along this fence and certain Palestinians have keys.

this wall, on the mexican border is the perfect candidate to solve ALL of our nations current woes:

1. Less illegals using our healthcare, we get better healthcare, many less are ‘uninsured’

2. less jobs here are taken by non-tax-paying illegals

3. more taxes to reduce gov’t debt

4. less crime and poverty

5. less USA $$ goes south

6. the mexican government would then have to give more concessions to our demands

7. more virgins freed up for africa, indonesia, asia, and shorter hours for them too

8. less corrupt voting

9. less burden on USA school systems and other such services

10. 14,452,867,853 minutes are collectively saved by USA citizens not having to wait to get through the ‘press 1 for spanish, 2 for arabic, 3 for any other language on phone calls.

11. Building the fence would require work, work requires ....jobs....mmmmmmmm

everybody is a winner

The Israelis and the Saudis have border barriers that work because the people that sneak in will kill politicians and leaders if they can.
The invasion over our southern border does not endanger our politicians and elites.

Until it does, our southern border will continue to be unsecured.

But it routinely endangers American citizens nationwide. More have been killed annually than the total killed on 9/11. It’s the darkest fact you want to hear.

I’m pretty sure you would want a high-tech security fence on the southern border.

Yes, it does.
Regardless of how much lip service our politicians give to American’s safety, their actions say that a big percentage of them could care less haw many of the “serfs” are killed.

When the pols and “elites” start getting killed on a regular basis, a good barrier will go up and our border will get militarized..

We know that the Mexican government has provided its citizens with brochures on evading the Border Patrol. I wonder if they have also recommended that U.S. politicians be on their “protected species” list to avoid raising their dander.

I believe the French said similar things about their Maginot Line....

In any case, it's foolish to think that a wall would solve any of the ills you mention.

None of the problems you listed is caused by lack of a wall. All of the problems are a result of Americans paying illegals to come here.

When will you folks start looking at the real roots of the problem?

For one thing, a similar wall along the US-Mexico border would be about 600 times as long as the Israeli one, and therefore impossible to control at similar levels.

And in any case, long walls don't have a very good track record, when it comes to keeping invaders out.

And given that the driving force behind illegal immigration to the US is economic -- i.e., Americans pay illegals to come here -- it would be far better to spend our time and effort on addressing those causes instead.

Most U.S. politicians are the illegals friends.

US folks can’t friggin do much else.
US friggin folks do NOT hire II’s
What is better, the wall or AMNESTY
the wall provides better security,
the wall slows down the illegal immigration rate
the wall.......works, ask Duncan Hunter

the post was mostly sarcastic, but there is
more than a hint of truth to it

until you have read all my posts, don’t generalize me,
because ‘you’ generalists are all the same

the maginot line? get real, it was french

I won’t bother to reply to your little rant, other than to suggest that I’d be more likely to pay attention to you if you showed evidence of rational thought.

Personally I'd like to see a $5,000 per day per illegal worker fine levied against companies that hire them.

That's for the first offense.

Second offense would be a ten year prison sentence for the Officers of any corporation who engaged in the behavior.

r9etb,

I apologize for being irrational in thinking that a barrier that has already proven its effectiveness in California would work elsewhere.

I apologize for not recognizing that the Maginot line (a series of forts, not a continuous barrier) already failed in keeping illegal german immigrants out of france

I apologize for the irrational assumption that by reducing the number of illegal immigrants coming into our country from mexico, we might reduce the strain on our schools, hospitals and law enforcement organizations.

and so on...

as the admins of this forum ask for no personal attacks and you choose to ignore that request, I guess we should leave it at that
