Detroit clamping down on employee scents

DETROIT, - City officials in Detroit say workers at three city buildings will soon have to monitor their scents or face possible warnings.

The Detroit News said Sunday that placards will be put up in the three Detroit buildings detailing the new guidelines on employees' use of such scented items as cologne or perfume.

The notices due at the Cadillac Square Building, Coleman A. Young Municipal Center and First National Building will also ask employees to refrain from using air fresheners and scented candles while on the job.

The new regulations are the result of the city's settlement of a 2008 lawsuit filed by a city planner, who claimed she had breathing sensitivity due to a co-worker's perfume.

Attorney Ann Curry Thompson, who represents city planner Susan McBride, said her client's lawsuit under the Americans with Disabilities Act could prove beneficial to others, the report said.

"It's unique. I think it should be used as a model for other people who are having similar problems," Thompson told the News.

Either way, it doesn’t make any scents.

Considering the fact that artificial scents have been used for millenia, one wonders what kind of wusses we have become. My guess is that there are a lot of folks with “allergies” that would whine unceasingly if the odor they smelled was naturally emitted. BO stinks more than you may remember.

Ahh, #9. It’s up there with WD-40 for that manliest of many scents.

No contest. WD-40 is so pedestrian compared to Hoppes.

How hard could it be to learn to rinse your nasal passages to get rid of perfume bothers?

I started doing the nasal rinse thing about a year ago. It has helped me tremendously.

That’s “light machine oil”...the kind you’d use on a sewing machine. Hardly a manly scent.

Have you ever had asthma? I didn’t think so, most of us survive but asthma attacks are difficult and scary. Not being able to draw in a breath has only happened to me once. I was rushed to the ER and I survived but it scared the hell out of me.

Considering the fact that artificial scents have been used for millenia,

Not really, until recently scents were made by combining oils from flowers, herbs, spices or resins. I have no problem with those scents but the truly artificial scent makes me gasp.

For room freshener I use straight citrus oils. The smell can be quite strong but it does not product the same reaction that even a mild room spray produces.

If I can smell your perfume or after shave from 20 ft away you used to much. It plugs up my nose and makes my throat sore. Ditto for that coconut air freshener.

My doctor shares office space with an allergist, signs up about NOT wearing any scent at all out of consideration to allergy suffers.

I had to sit in the jury pool room with 400 other people...most wearing way to strong scents.......made me quite sick.

A little bit goes a long way, wear it sparingly. Only your partner should be able to smell it when he or she holds you.

Maybe if the employees showered occasionally, they wouldn’t smell so bad!
