Stolen Valor

Posted on 03/13/2010 6:56:17 AM PST by Sarah-bot

I want to approach this delicately because it is a delicate issue. Throughout our discussions we commonly encounter individuals referring to their military service as a form of reference. I must admit that I have done this my self. The point is that there is no way to know if someone is stealing valor by claiming military service on this forum. I am willing to submit my DD -214 to Jim Robinson or his surrogates. My suggestion is that anyone having prior military service (validated by DD-214 gets a star or some such indicator by their screen name), and those people can reference their military service. I am not saying this because I want to brag, I just resent the idea of people using pretentious military service as a form of reference. If I am out of line on this I apologize and I will accept the rebuke graciously.

The good people just did it and do not talk about it. I am proud of my service as you are. And I understand what you say. There are talker’s and then there are do’ers. My neighbor as a kid was in the battle of the buldge. I only got the story from his son once he died. He would never talk about it when I was a kid. And we asked. Expressing you self is never wrong. Especially here. Thanks for your service brother.

This is just my non-military service opinion (1972 draft no. 10 but pair of sports injury surgical knee kept me out after pre-induction physical / FR member since '98), but I also tend to respect and defer to those claiming they have served or are serving and think I understand where you are coming from.

The Mods have more than enough on their plates already, but could a small star, crossed rifles, or other symbol be made available in the Tagline space at registration or profile maintenance for anyone who wants it and can provide suitable documentation?

If not it's no big deal, but the opinions of those who have actually taken "the oath" and put it on the line do FWIW carry an aura of authority which others don't possess.

I agree with you on all counts. I just get angry when people throw it in my face. I do not speak about it upfront, normally.

OK with me if FR wants to do so. Sorta like veterans plates on an automobile.

I don’t think I’ve ever participated in a thread where somebody threw their military service around to prove their point.

That said, nobody better question my service.

I was in...Sang Bang...Dang Gong...I was all over the place, a lot of places.

I was with the Green Berets, Special Unit Battalions... Commando Airborne Tactics...Specialist Tactics Unit Battalion.

Yeah, it was real hush hush. I was Agent Orange, Special Agent Orange, that was me. I even got shot in the ass.

Nice non-sequitur, but at least you have pretty toes.

Your concern is appreciated, but what you are proposing would be a logistical nightmare for Jim, and it might actually cause some people to unfairly cast a suspicious eye at freepers who declined to participate.

I remember seeing my DD214 not long after discharge, but I have no idea where it is 20+ years later. Probably in the attic somewhere, or stuffed at the bottom of my sea bag.

I understand all your points and agree, it is the concept rather that the actual implementation that I am promoting.

Do you oppose my reasoning in making this post?

Nope, it's a rational argument, I just think it's much ado about nothing.

Those that pose as ex-military and are frauds, usually have nothing of value to say.

" One more time: Was I wrong to making this post. I am seeing a lot of negativity, but no one has answered the simple question of “Was I wrong to make this post?”

No, Sarah-bot. You are definitely not wrong to post your ideas.

In fact you should post *all* your ideas. We *want* to know what you are thinking - all the time.

Knowing what's on your mind provides so many opportunities for intervention and therapy.

But I am not so quick to label the frauds. If I jumped to that conclusion I would have named a Vietnam vet a fraud, a man who I regrettably named a REMF.
