Stolen Valor

Posted on 03/13/2010 6:56:17 AM PST by Sarah-bot

I want to approach this delicately because it is a delicate issue. Throughout our discussions we commonly encounter individuals referring to their military service as a form of reference. I must admit that I have done this my self. The point is that there is no way to know if someone is stealing valor by claiming military service on this forum. I am willing to submit my DD -214 to Jim Robinson or his surrogates. My suggestion is that anyone having prior military service (validated by DD-214 gets a star or some such indicator by their screen name), and those people can reference their military service. I am not saying this because I want to brag, I just resent the idea of people using pretentious military service as a form of reference. If I am out of line on this I apologize and I will accept the rebuke graciously.

I don’t know you will have to ask Obama’s brown star Czar. Sniff my tagline

Can’t even ask a valid question and I should respect you why?

All I see is a crude little monkey who cannot stand on their own merit.

It is well known that bull shitte artists that try to fake it in a VFW or Legion are soon discredited because their lies surface quickly....usually because someone was there or has knowledge of the facts far beyond the BS’er.

This is one reason I being a veteran of the Vietnam era are not comfortable joining organizations like the VFW and American Legion.I would feel very uncomfortable Not being a combat vet. I don’t want my honor challanged just because I was not serving during a battle.Even though it was Not my fault. It just wasn’t in the cards for me and others like me.

So I’ll stay affilliated with the Air Force Association.

PaleoBob that is so inappropriate. I was not initially speaking about McCain, or that female individual. This post is about stolen valor. You could have justified your butt picking as some post traumatic influence and I would have treated you with supposed compassion, but instead you had to insult me and the intentions of my post.

Does my slacking six in the AR during Vietnam (E-4, E-2; E-4, E-2) count? George W. Bush had a better attendance record.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
You just didn’t understand that attendance/participation was Mandatory.....<: <:

My DD214/215 is, for the most part, public record, but I have to give you approval to get it for yourself.

That said, You want to check my record etc, come pry it out of my cold, dead hands...oh, that is for something else...

As to the validity of the 214, one of the posters had it right, it can be altered....I mean look at Kerry’s POSTED DD214 with his Silver Star/with v for Valor.
All someone did was copy from his Bronze and replace it with the word Silver...only the dumb (MAYBE NOT SO DUMB) SOB didn’t realize there is NO V FOR VALOR attachment for a SILVER STAR...

It just comes up, I just don’t like it when it does. Like I said it is too easy to make a claim on the internet. Like many have said, you can normally tell the ones who are lying. I was just suggesting a method that would stop the lying. The truth is that military members have insights and perspective that should be shared and this site helps that venue. I personally think my idea would benefit the discourse, but then again it is only a suggestion.

>>Mine is framed and on the wall at the office. I did tape over the SS# though. LOL<<

At the risk of dating myself, my USMC serial number was NOT my SS#. How does one prevent identity theft after military service when every set of orders has the number prominently displayed?

One more time: Was I wrong to making this post. I am seeing a lot of negativity, but no one has answered the simple question of “Was I wrong to make this post?”

Mine either. I still have an E.R # that I can recite. But the SS# was on there also. I with I could have been to the Winter Soulders meeting and made those pukes recite their #’s. Everyone remembers it. You have to recite it to get PAID! So I guess that means I am old too. LOL

Good morning:

“Was I wrong to make this post?”

No. It's a vanity post. You can post whatever you like, just so the mods think it appropriate.

Many people have seen my DD Form 214, and many are FReepers, but I don't think, in the arena of ideas, that it really matters that much.

And to John F'n Kerry, if you are reading this, I'll sign a SF 180 if you will.

Military service is relevant to valor, honor, and sacrifice.

So are lots of other life choices. Military veterans don't have a corner on the integrity market. Seems to me that the result could be the Balkanization of Free Republic.

At what point do we end up posting everyone's resumes' for the purpose of establishing our qualifications to have an opinion? It would add no value whatsoever.

I am not busting your chops. I don’t know what to say. Good lord , I am sure that you have validation of your service, but that is not finally the point. The point is that I am frustrated we people using their service as a shield. If am cleared to spit in the eye of every poser that claims military service than fine, then we are all on level ground. I am a vet, but who gives a rats ass. There are much more heroic vets than me.

That would be quite a bit of sensitive information in one place. Very vulnerable to a subpoena, search warrant, or just plain theft. Not good.

ah yes...493...etc...etc...remember it well. Even my SS# is entrapped in my mind forever, just don’t ‘pound’ it out with the love of my Service #..

A good way to nab a phony SEAL is ask him what his BUDS # is...that also is ‘tatooed to the inside of your eyeballs’ and if one pauses etc chances are good further ‘trip up’ questions are in order, or at least statements etc to cause him to trip up....

That’s the first thing I thought. I use my given name. I also use the number the Federal Bureau of Prisons gave me.

What about those who have both military service and prison time? Which mark shall they bare?

FR is the most professional and courteous forum I have found on the internet. Posters’ comments and posting history are enough to separate the wheat from the chaff here.

ABSOL . . TOOTY! In the army it was either ER or RA And if you did not put SIR after it you were wrong. An no hesitation. LOL I learned a long time ago to memorise everything. I do it with Driver’s license, SS# checking account and Debit card.

The question is was it wrong as far as good taste. Am I the only one who has encountered some throwing there service in your face. It makes me made because many times I don’t say anything about it, normally I don’t wear my service on my sleeve. I called someone out on it a week ago and ended up calling him a REMF. It turned out that he was a vet from the TET. I felt bad about it but if he would not have questioned my right to voice my opinion, and if I had not also been a vet I would not have let the conversation get to that point. From now on I invite people to talk to me through email went these situation occur. I trust the man I talked to and I now understand his position, based on issues outside of Vietnam. Anyway I hope that man is not mad at me over this thread, but I feel there was need for this post.
