Batman ends: Christopher Nolan's third could be his final instalment (Superman included)

Despite the fevered speculation about the future of Batman in the wake of the spectacular success of The Dark Knight two years ago, we've been given very little in the way of hard facts about the future of the series. That is, until now. A new interview with director Christopher Nolan, in which he talks about his plans for the third film, as well as his overseeing role on Superman, appears to outline where the man who brought Batman back from the horrors of the Joel Schumacher years sees the character going. And it may not make comfortable reading for execs at studio Warner Brothers.

Nolan, while characteristically tight-lipped, confirms that the third episode of his Batman series will be the final instalment, and will mostly feature the characters and actors who appeared in the first two films. "We have a great ensemble, that's one of the attractions of doing another film, since we've been having a great time for years," he told the LA Times.

"Without getting into specifics, the key thing that makes the third film a great possibility for us is that we want to finish our story," the film-maker added.

SNIP

Nolan refused to confirm whether there would be another main villain for the third film, saying only that Mr Freeze would not be appearing. But his comments over the returning cast make me wonder whether he and screenwriting brother Jonathan Nolan might have plumped for a scenario in which the story continues straight on from the end of The Dark Knight, in which Batman was left running for his life with the forces of Gotham at his heels, rather than a distinct new episode with a new bad guy to be outwitted.

David S Goyer who wrote Dark Knight is writing Superman as per the article. Good. Unlike the metrosexual film of the last Supermman. On the Dark Knight sequel...Paul Giamatti as Penguin?

The Brits taking over Batman was the best thing. The older ones were crap. Bale, Caine, Oldman are a great line up.

Maybe they’ll do the storyline where batman comes back out of retirement as the gangs have taken over Gotham, only to have superman have to ‘stop’ him. Give them an excuse to cast someone as Green Arrow too.

Christopher Nolan is Brit while his brother Jonathan Nolan is American. Chris is dual citizen. I read the story about the 2 of them in the LAT. His brother Jonathan chose to stay in America. I’ve heard both of them talk and Jonathan doesn’t have a brit accent at all.

Paul Giamatti as Penguin

I can see that, but been done. Course Joker had been done before too.

Hate to see a new villain created that didn't appear in the comics but really the only one left worth putting on the big screen (that's not dead) is Harley Quinn.

Bane maybe?

I like Green Arrow, even though the character is a liberal (as pointed out so many times by Hal Jordan/green Lantern). Eddie Murphy as the Riddler? yeesh.

Harley Quinn is attached to Joker’s gang so i doubt we’ll see her..unless she breaks out her old boss from prison.

Yea that is a problem. I don’t think anyone else could come close to playing Joker like Ledger did so can’t bring Joker back just to work in Harley.

Unless they her somehow to work a storyline that doesn’t actually involve Joker on the screen, except maybe seen only in shadows so as not to degrade Ledger’s performance.

Yes. I should have mentioned Nolan too as part of the success. I would go see those films because Bale once told his liberal step-mother Gloria Steinem to shut up when she was lecturing at dinner. Oldman was furious when Dems tried to use him in that film where he played a senator. Caine is anti-high taxes and anti-labour party in the UK.

They did a great job taking a pretty crappy franchise of awful prior Batman movies and doing some pretty good films.

There is a goldmine to be made with a serious Wonder Woman movie.

It will happen, like Marvel is building up to an Avengers movie by giving several of the characters their own movies (Iron Man 2 this year, Thor the next, then Captain America). DC want to do the same building up to a Justice League movie (Batman 3, Superman (reboot), Wonder Woman, and maybe Flash. I doubt Hawkman/girl or Jon Jonezz will get their own movie though.

I’m really pulling for King Tut to get his star turn in one of these movies... I mean what other supervillain has his own harem of dancing girls feeding him grapes off the vine?

I'd love to see a Green Hornet flick the premise is great, two under cover crime fighters who are thought to be arch criminals always on their own hated by everybody.Bruce Lee was great as Kato so it would really be tough to recast the role.
