There is no doubt about it: we all like to think we dress for ourselves. Why do we like to think that? Because it says, I exude confidence, I have high self esteem and I like to feel feminine. It shows independence and that you have your own mind, but just how many of us do actually dress for ourselves?
I would say I dress for myself about 95 percent of the time. I like to power dress, wearing what I want gives me confidence. I seek comfort in what I wear and receive more comfort out of jeans and heels than a tracksuit, simply because it makes me feel confident and good about myself. Thats all I look for in an outfit.
What affects the way we dress? Lots of aspects can influence our choices, our company for example. Its not just pictures that speak a thousand words, our outfit can as well, and we can communicate through clothes. You can see someone across the street and form an opinion of them in less than ten seconds and you havent even spoken to them. We base our opinions on what people wear and how they wear it. For example, when meeting your parents are you dressing for yourself or for them? When going out with your girlfriends, are you dressing for them? Or, if you have a hot date you may dress a little more provocatively than usual, all these aspects influence our choices.

Okay, it’s worse than I had originally thought. Women dress for other women due to their subconsciously imprinted lesbian tendencies.
Thank you! Too often the fractured English found on the Web is accepted and then perpetuated by Internet users.
Hey, if it weren’t for women, we’d be stuck with an ugly President and still live in a free country!
Oh yes.. And things would ACTUALLY GET DONE AT WORK too!
A horse walks up to Sarah Jessica Parker and says “hey, why the long face?”
>>Unless I find something to wear on the way to the closet.<<
That pile at the foot of my bed seems to work well for clothing spelunking.
Here’s the winner!
I don’t think ‘it’s because of the importance placed on appearance’ for women. I think, rather, as a woman — it is an innate desire to look beautiful. Sometimes perverted, as in that white dress with the couch-daisy on the shoulder, pictured in this article. haha. But, for me — I am a mom. I love colors. I like to look beautiful.
Now, don’t get me wrong — I am just ordinary looking. But I like to get my hair done, wear pretty clothes, buy shoes. I think these things are woven into our souls. I do it for my husband, to look nice. But I do it for myself, to look my best and to feel pretty.
I don’t see this need in the men in my family. And I don’t do it because ‘society values it.’ Because I am a strong Christian, most of my views are alternative and very much NOT society-driven. I just think God made women to be pretty.
I believe it was Angie Dickinson who said “I dress for women and undress for men”.
Clothing is an art form-like jewelry, accessories etc. and I use it to reflect my mood, make a statement or just to share a great design. It’s fun...like the song says: “I enjoy being a girl!”

I don’t agree that women dress to compete with other women for men’s attention. Women just are beautiful innately. Some wear sweats and let themselves go, don’t care. But if you want to look your best — just as you want to do your best at your job — you will take the time to make that happen.
AND I do it for my husband, because I cherish him and want to make him happy.
So is the outfit an attempt to distract a man from noticing her horse-face and skeletal arms and legs?
I disagree. I think the whole heroin-thin thing was conceived and pushed by the homosexuals who are prominent in the fashion industry, whose preference is for little boys. The thin, asexual female models are more like adolescent boys than women. As such, they appeal to the homosexuals, and don’t threaten them. Also, Cosmo features women with, shall we say, well developed figures. Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar are the main offenders in the heroin-thin category.
I am a fan of Sarah because she’s beautiful inside and out. Truly a lovely woman.
You are ABSOLUTELY correct sir.
Sounds reasonable to me.

I like Sarah Palin as well.
I like to be:
-comfortable
-clean and
-modest
I am not happy if I am not all three of the above.
After that I like to be
-colorful, color coordinated
-flattered by my clothes (make my bod look its best, looks best with my skin tone and hair etc)
I really don’t feel happy if I feel like I look bad.
I like your explanation the best because it’s true for me too!
(But hearing I don’t look like a 37 year old mom of four is nice too once in a while, LOL. A wife who is 5’4” and about 112 lbs after nearly 15 years of marriage gives my husband something to brag about—I’ve actually been mistaken for his daugher, and he’s my age!)
