Who Do Women Dress For? (Women, style & self confidence issues)
The Fashion Time Magazine ^ | Mar 10th, 2010 | Lucy Godfrey

There is no doubt about it: we all like to think we dress for ourselves. Why do we like to think that? Because it says, ‘I exude confidence, I have high self esteem and I like to feel feminine.’ It shows independence and that you have your own mind, but just how many of us do actually dress for ourselves?

I would say I dress for myself about 95 percent of the time. I like to power dress, wearing what I want gives me confidence. I seek comfort in what I wear and receive more comfort out of jeans and heels than a tracksuit, simply because it makes me feel confident and good about myself. That’s all I look for in an outfit.

What affects the way we dress? Lots of aspects can influence our choices, our company for example. It’s not just pictures that speak a thousand words, our outfit can as well, and we can communicate through clothes. You can see someone across the street and form an opinion of them in less than ten seconds and you haven’t even spoken to them. We base our opinions on what people wear and how they wear it. For example, when meeting your parents are you dressing for yourself or for them? When going out with your girlfriends, are you dressing for them? Or, if you have a hot date you may dress a little more provocatively than usual, all these aspects influence our choices.

Men don't tell to worry about these issues, but it's different for women, because of the importance placed on appearance.

For Whom do Women Dress?

There, fixed it.

The answer, of course, is themselves.

I find it usually works out better to put clothes on before heading outside.

Women primarily dress for, and to compete against other women.

The whole heroin thin thing was has been conceived by and primarily appeals to women. Men have always prefered a more mature and bustier look. If men drove fasion then thin (to the degree it has taken over) would never have been “In”.

Thin fashions came from Cosmo, not men’s magazines.

Men may not think much about this stuff (I know I certainly don’t) ... but its a good thing to have a wife that knows what she’s doing. My wife will often outright admit to wearing something just because I like it.

And, I’ve been to WalMart recently ... so I won’t pretend that all women care how they look. There are a significant number of women that live in sweatpants. Bleh. Must make the husband feel all hot and bothered.

I like it that my wife takes pride in her clothes and appearance.

I wear what’s closest in the closet. Unless I find something to wear on the way to the closet.

Women dress for each other. It’s nothing but a contest between them for the attention of men.

“So next time you’re picking out your outfit, ask yourself why this top? Why these trousers? Try to choose your pieces for the right reasons; the rest will fall into place.”

Because this “top” smells like mine, even though it’s been through the washer dozens of times. I’m picky about the trousers because my wife’s are a little short and she’d kill me if I got grease stains on them. Mostly I dress for other people because, let’s face it, you’d not like to see me undressed.

Is it too much to connect the two statements and say that you like that your wife will also wear something you like because you like it?

I will believe women dress to please themselves when a local TV station is interviewing a perfectly dressed, made-up and coifed woman commenting about the fire that just got her @ss off the couch while he eating bon-bons and watching Harpo.

I believe that young women dress completely for others, older women dress for themselves and sometimes their husbands!

I think it does have to do with the fact that appearance is at least perceived as a bigger importance for women than for men.

And I think it also is to attract attention.

I showed your post to my wife and she laughed. I admit it, if it were up to me she’d always the wear the shortest and tightest skirts with the most revealing tops to show off the tattoos that she doesn’t have, but she would if she were dressing for me.

Some women shouldn’t bother to dress, others should be required to wear burkas at all times. Big burkas.

LOL - And here’s something else about men vs. women; men can honestly say something like that, seeing the humor in the topic... [It’s very slightly bathroom humor.] women would generally find it somewhat crass, possibly because it IS laughing at one’s own appearance and the perception others have (i.e. killing a sacred cow).

“Women dress for each other. It’s nothing but a contest between them for the attention of men.”

You have it mostly right. We dress for other women but not necessarily to compete for the attention of men. If that were true, we’d be naked. :)

I know this is going to fly like a lead balloon....

but as a male I totally bored with what women think, or look like,or dress for "power".....women have elevated themselves to such a degree, that most males will look and move on...
