Many at that time were new converts to the church from Europe. They brought with them family heirlooms. Although Mormons are taught to focus on Jesus’s life not his death and so do not have crosses in any of the church buildings but instead have pictures/sculptures of Jesus there is nothing that prevents a Mormon from wearing a cross.
As for praying, the focus is on reverence, respect and personal relationship rather than ritual. Mormons are taught to have personal conversations with their heavenly father rather than reciting “canned prayers”.
Dear Heavenly Father
Thank Thee for..............
Please bless and keep safe ................
personal requests ..............
In the Name of Jesus Christ Amen.

I don’t know who is who so I’ll address everyone here. Three questions for you Mormons:
Do you believe that you will become a God? Is that your goal?
Is our God, Yahweh or Jehovah, the I AM - the ONLY God?

I honestly do not know what a “canned” prayer is.
Is the example you gave one that you think is not canned or that is not canned?
I have lds family members, and they literally will laugh out loud at the thought of wearing a cross.
I have been to several wards, (and it may not be all of them) and never saw anything of a picture/sculpture of Jesus. In fact, I lived with some of my family members for a time and went to their ward, in the months I went I never even heard the Name of Jesus. Again, it could have been just their ward.

(If you are going to quote the Bible know what you are quoting.)

Mormons are taught to have personal conversations with their heavenly father rather than reciting canned prayers. Oh; yeah...

(Heck is where people, who don't believe in Gosh, think they are not going...)
