It's an interesting little irony... Pat Quinn ended up having to defend the blantantly corrupt scumbag Blago in 2006 due to the odd law that lets candidates run individually in the primary but ties them at the hip in the general election. Quinn's staying in statewide office was dependent on Blago winning.

Since the RATs destroyed our Presidential ticket in 2008 by portraying McCain as "Bush's third term" (even though McCain and Bush had vehemently disliked each other for eight years), Quinn being associated with Blago seems to be poetic justice.

As for a possible Quinn/Simon ticket, here's the telegenic team. Words fail me:

News item:

Sans candidate Mark Kirk and Judy Baar-Topinka, the REST of the IL GOP's 2010 statewide slate gathered in Addison yesterday to show unified support for Bill Brady's candidacy for governor

===========================================================

Once again, Judy Baar and Marky Kirk prove that “party unity” is a one way street with them. They demand conservatives get behind them, but will NEVER lift a finger to support conservative candidates.

I fully intend to show Mark & Judy the same level of "support" they give to people like Bill Brady and Peter Fitzgerald.

I suggest that one-way-street vs two-way-street be a major criteria in our choice of where to draw the line in supporting people who don’t agree with us on every issue.

If we have neither Sen nor Gov and have a chance to gain 1 out of 2 then there is nothing tactically wrong with supporting candidates for both if it is a two-way-street and the other guy supports our guy.

Changing topic slightly, A far left Dem political consultant was on CSPAN talking healthcare and Obama agenda in general. She was quite certain that Kirk and the Rino in for Biden’s seat in Delaware would be good for the Obama agenda. They would vote for it and give the cover of bi-partisan so blue-dogs could then vote for it.

Conclusion. Put all our time, money, energy into the good candidates on the ballot ... Walsh, Hultgren, Kinsinger, Brady, etc. Don’t waste any time, money or energy on the likes of Kirk. Don’t waste energy on a 3d party candidate who can’t possibly woin. That just sucks energy from the good campaigns that can win.

Why did otherwise conservative legislators vote for in-state tuition for illegals?

Sometimes I wonder if immigration wasn’t the real issue there. State Universities and their staff are powerful lobbies in the districts of Chambana, Bloomormal, Carbondale, DeKalb, etc. They need students to justify their existence ..and expansion. They are losing in competition with adjacenet states.

eg Indiana U is heavily advertising that its out-of-state tuition is cheaper than Illinois in-state tuition, which has long been true and a competitive disadvantage for IL Universities.

Thus, the university lobbies need to push to obtain students by any means necessary. Of course, nobody would ever think to ask: WHY are IL universities so expensive?

Your possible explanation sounds very plausible to me.

Also there may have been other things in the bill I don't know if it was a stand alone bill or not.

Re: the two way street thing , it's the same old story.

9 times out of 10 it seems the "RINO" refuses to support conservatives. When the RINO is defeated in the primary they often endorse the rat. Yet they demand loyalty. How about showing some? Topinka has less of an excuse not to be there supporting Brady than than Kirk. I'd love to hear it. Doesn't she want to pay him back for helping her beat "conservative" Jim Oberdouce as several IL freepers allege? LOL

She has the honor of being the only general election candidate (2002) I've ever voted for that has won! Not counting Bush as technically I was voting for his IL electors, who lost.

With Kirk there is at least a cognizant argument of why it might be a net positive to have his behind in the Senate. I see no point in keeping Judy around, anyone?

I agree with you Spintreebob, whether you hold your nose and vote for these types or not, they certainly aren't entitled to any of your money or time.

Oh and I barf in Sheila Simon’s general direction. And I barf at her friends in her video.

Her troll father actually breeded? That’s disgusting. Why oh why? Another legacy rat? The Stevensons and the Madigans and the Jacksons and the constant specter of Chris Kennedy isn’t enough, we need to have more Simons too?

If her name was Sheila Smith her bid for LT Governor would be laughed at.

I agree with you, about Topinka. In the comptroller race, I might vote for the Constitution or Libertarian Party candidate. I’ll decide in Oct.

Mobie Vulgus posted this article on the state board.

Judy ain’t doing much campaigning. Supposedly she didn’t in the primary either and just won on name recognition. Sigh.

They picked Sheila Simon.

Barf.

Totally snubbed Art Turner who came in second in the primary. Sure the vast majority of rat primary voters didn’t vote for Turner. But zero voted for Simon cause she didn’t run.

Come on Turner, play the race card and call for a boycott would ya!?

Has Shelia Simon's selection been set in stone yet? My understanding is that Quinn told the RAT state central committee that he wants Simon as a running mate but they could still defy his wishes and pick someone else. Of course that would make him look weaker on the campaign trail knowing the IL RAT Party snubbed the Governor's choice.

Simon ran for mayor of Carbondale back in 2007 and got crushed by the RINO incumbent, Brad Cole, who himself is a weak candidate and came in fifth place in this year's GOP Lt. Governor primary. The spawn of the legendary Paul Simon got her butt kicked by Brad Cole...how humiliating. I'd pay money to watch Jason Plummer debate her.

And yeah it's gonna be great if Art Turner throws a hissy fit. He won nearly 200,000 votes in the RAT primary, including finishing first in Crook County, home of the Chicago machine. Sheilia Simon won 0. The Dems rejecting him AND State Senator Iris Martinez in favor of yet another lily white pampered politican's kid... boy the IL RAT Party sure doesn't like "people of color" to head their ticket (and remember, the RAT establishment's choice for Senator in 2004 was Dan Hynes, not Obama) Don't let the RATs send you to the back of the bus, Art! You don't have to take that!

Speaking of 2004, this puts the RATs in the same situation we had after a month of scrambling to find a replacement after Jack Ryan withdrew... and finally settling on Alan Keyes -- which caused many supporters of "primary election runner up" Jim Oberweis to cry fowl. Once again, 2010 seems to be poetic justice for the RATs sins of the past. First Quinn getting tied to Blago, and now Art Turner getting the Oberweis treatment. If it gets any better, we'll get a RAT version of Ray LaHood out trashing liberal candidates on the campaign trail.

I saw Bill Brady yesterday. I went up to him and said Mr. Brady, I just want to let you know I am ready to support you for Governor.

I thought he was gonna faint.

I said I saw you in a lot of debates where you said you are against illegal immigration, I am so glad. Now, I can support you as you run for governor.

Brady said “ I am against illegal immigration.”

I said God Bless you Bill, and he answered, God Bless you.

I think I made his night!

The rat central committee met yesterday and choose her.

http://www.sj-r.com/carousel/x38421483/Democratic-party-to-pick-lieutenant-gov-nominee

“Several members of the 38-person committee cast their weighted votes for Turner, who argued his nearly three decades in the Illinois House, and the fact he placed second for lieutenant governor, made him the best candidate.

But Simon won an easy victory, getting more than 1 million weighted votes to less than 600,000 for Turner. Weighted votes were based on Democratic strength in the congressional districts of committee members.”

Doesn’t smell like an honest process.

In the last election for Mayor of Carbondale Simon was defeated by incumbent RINO Brad Cole (ironically as you recall he was a GOP candidate for LT Guv).

What a lovely choice for the people of Carbondale that was.

Eh, they tend to be pretty screwy down there due to SIU. Their main campus is in Carbondale, so half the people wandering around town are moonbats who are either enrolled as students or tenured professors (I visited the area a few years back and briefly considered getting my B.A. there, before settling on the even more left-wing Columbia in Chicago). From Wikipedia:

Activism

Probably due to the presence of Southern Illinois University, Carbondale residents have a tradition of political activism. During the Vietnam War, and especially after the Kent State shootings, massive anti-war demonstrations took place on the SIU campus and on the streets of Carbondale. They resulted in the closure of SIU, more than $100,000 of property damage, more than 400 arrests,[12] and the deployment of the National Guard to restore order.[13]

Several local organizations are concerned with peace, justice, and the environment, including the Peace Coalition of Southern Illinois/Fellowship of Reconciliation, the Shawnee Green Party, the Student Environmental Center, the Southern Illinois Center for a Sustainable Future, and local chapters of the American Civil Liberties Union, the Sierra Club, and the National Audubon Society.

In 2001 the city was the location for the national Green Party Congress.
