NEW YORK - Tim Burton and Johnny Depp's trip down the rabbit hole drew huge crowds, as "Alice in Wonderland" earned a whopping $116.3 million in its opening weekend a record for a 3-D film.
The surprisingly huge total easily surpassed all other films in release and gave Walt Disney Studios an even bigger opening than that of the hugely popular 3-D film "Avatar." It also marked the biggest opening weekend for a non-sequel.
"This is just one of those cultural phenomenons that has caught everybody's interest," said Chuck Viane, Disney's president of distribution. "They don't come like this very often."

LOL...this coupled with the Oscar results makes this a bad evening for James Cameron...
It’s really not that much of a “surprise”....Burton’s laid down some real crappers but he’s produced some gems, too. From the trailers, this looks like one of those gems.
This move is an artist dollmakers dream.. the costuming and makeup of the characters alone is fantastic.
I totally loved “Alice”. It was good old fashioned entertainment. No evidence of Hollywood Leftism. Amazing. A miracle in our day and age.
I love Sandra Bullock and was truly happy that she won best actress. I like her films, usually simple comedies with romance and good humor. "The Blind Side" was a good movie-lots of pathos but lots of humor and hope as well.
Tim Burton fanatics should be kept away from sharp objects and matches.

Really? No lefty, subliminal message in the film? Ok. My GF has been nagging me to see it.
Funny... I saw Alice In Wonderland in 3-D this weekend. I haven’t been to opening weekend for any movie since 2001 and that was ‘Pearl Harbor.’ I just wanted to see this movie, just wanted to get out. The wife and the kids were bugging me too. If a guy like me can make into the theater for opening weekend, then that opening weekend has to be big. I don’t go to movies that much.
What did you think of it?
‘It’s Complicated’ was one of the funniest movies I’ve seen in years and years.... and I was amazed I liked it since I hate Alex Baldwin.
I saw Alice in 3D Sunday afternoon and it was fabulous! Don’t know when I have enjoyed a movie this much in a long time.
Really felt like the 3d effects were a distraction from the movie, and disappointed they did the sequel rather than the original story. Just the few glimpses of what the film could have been during Alice's flashback sequence really made me regret that they didn't do the original book.
Johnny Depp’s acting was...absent except for one or two scenes (my wife and I continue to debate that, she says just one..) And the movie never engaged me. I can see why the reviewers gave it so so marks.
BUT, as much as it wasn't the best film I've seen, it was the first film we've gone to see on an opening weekend in quite a while, and we made a complete day of it, including going to a maid cafe for an Alice in Wonderland high tea, and it meshed perfectly into my daughter's birthday celebration, so all in all, a great day.
Some of the visual effects in the film are amazing, but unless you're a real big fan of the Real3d style, probably best to see it in plain old 2d.
I was actually suspecting that that's what the movie was going to be! Thank you for providing a review saying otherwise.
I wonder how long people will go nuts for the 3-D magic? Thats one of the big reason people, myself included, saw Avatar in the theater instead of on DVD.
Sure the effects are fantastic and well worth the price of a ticket but how long will they be one of the big things driving people to the theater? At some point they’ll become ubiquitous and you won’t be able to make a mint on an average movie with amazing effects like Avatar.
Thanks for that review... It wasn’t the best movie I’ve seen either, but it’s the best one in awhile...
One thing about the depth of the new digital 3-D and even the old analog 3-D... There isn’t a realism to the depth. The depth isn’t gradual... It’s mostly just like watching a pop-up book version of 2-D. I am not impressed with 3-D that much, only to say that this story and the special effects of this movie would have been effective in either format.
I am glad you had a great time with your family for a very special occasion with your daughter. Happy Birthday to her! My oldest daughter’s birthday is next Saturday, btw. :-)
I would agree. This was a delightful film. I purposely saw it in 2D b/c I wanted to concentrate on Burton’s settings, color and details and not be distracted by 3D hoopla.
Depp was wonderful; the costuming and make-up fabulous; and the Alice/Looking Glass story didn’t break with a lot from the original.
The Bandersnatch was wonderfully done, as was the Cheshire cat and the Blue Caterpillar. At first I thought Tweedles off-putting, but grew to love them.
Depp’s delivery of the The Jabberwocky was great. Bizarre accent but great!
I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone who doesn’t enjoy Burton, Depp or feminism.
Why is a Raven like a writing desk? ...BWAHAHAHA!
Me too! And I have even had issues with Meryl Streep because of her goofy liberal buy-in. That said...I LOVE the movie....HOWLED through it, and then ended up loving her Julia Child movie-two movies I have seen with Meryl Streep in them after avoiding ANY movie with her in it for years.
