The Future of...the Hot Dog?
popsci ^ | 03.01.2010 | Clay Dillow

According to both common sense and the American Academy of Pediatrics, there are two truths about hot dogs which neither science nor industry can afford to ignore: kids love hot dogs, and hot dogs are the perfect size and shape for a child to choke on. To wit: "If you were to take the best engineers in the world and asked them to design a perfect plug for a child's airway, you couldn't do better than a hot dog," one AAP doctor said.

As such, the hot dog is in need of a redesign. So the folks at Fast Company took a look at California design house RKS's quest to cook up a completely rethought hot dog, and they did it using a design tool that is decidedly child-approved: the Play-Doh Fun Factory.

The team started with a blank slate but eventually decided that – in a tip of their hats to tradition – they wouldn’t radically alter the hot dog’s essence; a meat product, packaged with a bun, that more or less serves as a vehicle to get otherwise unmanageable condiments from plate to mouth.

You have kids who cannot chew? If they are special needs kids maybe you should feed them something more suitable.

If they are not special needs maybe you can get a monkey to teach them how.

Is NOTHING sacred anymore?

If a parent does’t know how to feed their kids, maybe they shouldn’t be a parent.

I have 2 children, 1 grandson, 6 siblings, countless nieces and nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, etc.

No one in our family ever choked on a hot dog.

I would cut the hot dogs into pieces for my kids when they were babies/toddlers. Same with just about every other kind of food.

A kids throat is smaller than a hot dog - even a small kid bite-size might choke him. That is why parents must actually sit with the child while he eats. Smush it - cut it up - chew it for him :). There are ways around this.

Where has all the common sense gone?

I seriously think most Americans have had it good for too long (even the poor ones) that we can’t do anything for ourselves anymore.

No problems solving skills.

Lord save us from public schools.

I think it is stupid to spend what will cost millions to do this when we know the cost will be passed on to the consumer. The solution is to cut it for the kids and if the parents are too lazy to do that then it will be their fault if their kid chokes to death.

DING DING DING!!! I said in a thread a week or so ago on this subject that the problem is parents being too busy or lazy to cut the hot dog into small pieces and supervising the child eating to ensure the child is chewing properly.
