They should be kept for education.

I learned that there is a good reason they call them killer whales and not cuddly sea puppies.

Should jourbalists who write shallow screeds about captive animals being mere entertainment rather than also being educational avoid the ridicule they deserve?

Should wild animals be held in captivity for human entertainment?

The answer to that all depends upon how good they taste.

I don’t think people realize how harsh nature can be to animals that live in the wild.

Okay, here’s my take.

At one time, there may have been an educational value to zoos. Before TV, when books were expensive and literacy was not so common, a zoo was pretty much the only place for the general public to see an animal from outside of one’s own geographical area. Now that we have information available on the Internet, and on the Discovery Channel and Animal Planet, I view a zoo as an entertainment venue and not an educational one, therefore, not strictly necessary.

Of course, there is always something to be said for seeing a wild animal in the flesh and not as a bunch of pixels. But I’d rather save that option for animals whose habitiat can be re-created in a relatively small space, such as a zoo offers. Go visit the snake house or the monkey jungle at the zoo, but for heaven’s sake leave a creature with the size and temperament of a killer whale out in the ocean where it belongs. You can’t build a new ocean in San Diego.

Just my opinion!

I don’t care.

Unilke many here I do not fret about what animals think (they don’t really)

I like my pets and I like my meat and skins...and I can pick my way through the nuance between those positions

the only concern I would have is decent treatment and extinction concerns but the latter are overused today

Of course not!

They should be free to wander wherever they like and eat us if they so desire.

“Should wild animals be held in captivity for human entertainment?”

No, they should be hunted and eaten.

I used to think so. However, in today’s world...there are so many avenues in which we can view wild animals, sea creatures etc. Not sure we should keep them in captivity. We have film, movies, TV all kinds of ways to see and learn about God’s creatures.

The whale that killed the trainer to me is innocent. If he saw her pony tail and it was moving...perhaps he was just acting on instinct and reached up for it. How does a whale know a human cannot breathe under water without drowning? If you look at him in the tank or swimming with the other whales...he is going about his business in a carefree way because he DOES NOT KNOW HE JUST KILLED A HUMAN BEING!!!!

I’m sure the trainer would speak out on behalf of the whale she loved. At any rate...maybe we have reached a point in our society where we no longer need this kind of so called entertainment from those in captivity. They should be free and in their own element as was intended.

Then later, as an adult, he saw a similar show, with dolphins and whales and he felt physically ill for the animals and the life they were forced to live.

To a liberal, only people should be owned by the collective powers and be forced to live as slaves - animals should roam free. To confuse these two makes them ill.

What is lost on those that make this claim is that these animals wouldn’t even be alive if not for inclusion in a zoo.

Life is ruff in the wild. At least these animals get a place to sleep and 3 meals a day (g).

Anyone can see the problem right there! The cat is looking at those outfits and wondering if they used to be on a relative. Plus the bad tailoring.
