Wild hogs plague Florida neighborhood

PLANTATION, Fla.- Officials in a Florida town are refusing to take action against a pack of wild hogs living in an affluent neighborhood, homeowners say.

Residents of Plantation Acres, which prides itself on being a "horse community," say the feral animals are ruining their expensive landscaping, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports.

"They really make a mess," says Nick Perris of the local homeowner's association. "They can eat through a lot of vegetation."

One resident hired an animal removal service to relocate the hogs but so far their trapper has been unable to catch any of them.

"They've come to my house 11 times since mid-December," says Kevin Lerner. "I replaced the lawns in sections they tore up but they keep coming back."

The city of Plantation refuses to intervene in the matter and police say the hogs are just a nuisance like a rodent.

"But a rodent doesn't weight 150 pounds," Lerner says.

I have mixed feelings about 150 lb wild hogs. They sure do a lot of damage, but then again, that size is just right for really good eatin’.

They may be hard to trap, so why not let people shoot them and have a hog BBQ? It brings all the neighbors together, and a good time could be had by everyone.

As Travis McGee notes, it is a good way to practice using your night vision gear as well.

I just saw two last night under my bird feeder. The dog was barking hysterically but wouldn’t get near them. They were slow to move off, not afraid.

I went in and got my old Mossberg 20-guage, loaded with bird shot, but they were gone.

I guess the bird shot wouldn’t kill them but neither would it feel very good.

I hate those things.

Put up fences, kill and eat them, get a big bad dog...lots of options. I live in the country, and I have deer, coons, armadillos, possums, etc. It’s a constant war against the damage they do, but I take it with a grain of salt, they live there too.

LOL! Just bought a box of Hornaday 9MM LUGER 115 gr FTX for my KAHR.

A Hornaday keeps the hogs away.

;^)

if you’re going to eat it then no probs, what we have around here is a problem with those folks who move down here and then expect to kill animals just because they do not want them near their lawns or houses.

Many go hunting around here and use the meat etc but to kill the animals because they do not like them going near their gated stuck up snotty nosed no character housing association is disgusting

A .22 long rifle just under the ear will usually drop them like a rock.

I guess they need to rediscover their “roots”:

“More than 30 years ago, Plantation Acres held community pig roasts, with residents gathering at a park for barn dances and to dine on swine.”

When people think of Florida, they typically think of alligators. The reality is that a wild boar is probably the most dangerous animal one would encounter in the wild here. Panthers, gators and bears are much less likely to come after you than a boar.

I’ve been buying it online, from Lucky Gunner. The only thing I’ve bought here is a couple of boxes of 30/30. The old model 94 is still my choice for hard times.

Just get a suppressed .308 rifle and some ammo loaded with 165 grain Hornady SSTs - problem solved.

You forgot to add: First, get a suppressed .22 LR and shoot a piglet, any piglet in the hind quarters. It's squealing can be heard in the next county, and will bring every feral hog within hearing distance running to it. Then, get ready, you'll probably run out of ammo.

And the only use a 9mm is going to be when your facing an angry boar is to shoot yourself with.
