Dawn Brancheau, an experienced trainer who understood the dangers of her job, was killed by a killer whale at the SeaWorld Shamu Stadium in Orlando, Fla.
...blame the victim
This animal has now killed THREE people. It needs to be destroyed.
Just turn the whales loose and figure out another way to make a buck.
She’d worked there for so many years. If that was the mistake, I just feel that she would have known to put it up around her head or in a bun. If she didn’t know to do that, then no one knows now that it was a mistake.
Knowing how politically correct and kiddie friendly it is to call these animals “Orca’s” - they are much more appropriately named Killer Whale’s for a reason
I guess trainers will no longer be wearing pony tail hair styles.
Killikum was sold to Seaworld under the proviso that he was a breeder only, and should not be used in shows.
Seaworld stretched that to mean no trainers in the water with him. They used him as the “show closer” who circles the tank and splashes the crowd. Trainers may not have been in the water with him, but they were in close contact with him.
“Hello?” Orcas pull seals off of beaches and ice floes to eat them.
The trainer’s family is going to sue Seaworld for millions, and they will settle and pay up.
When people get up close and personal with dangerous animals, sometimes the people die. This is very sad, but it’s hardly unexpected.
Hard to say what the Orca was thinking, but it sounds like with all that hair floating around, she made herself look like a large fishing lure, and subsequently hooked a big one...

It now becomes apparent that despite what SeaWorld says the trainer DID get into the water with the Orca. They have denied this happened. And they claim it is against policy. She is smiling widely. The video ends seconds before he grabs her. Some news sources have a still of the trainer in the water with the killer whale ... but now the video. I know many will not agree with me, but I think it is barbaric to treat animals like this. http://www.wesh.com |
An Ocra witha rap sheet? Oh please, that fish would be in a can so fast it would make HIS head spin. Can him and ship him to Hati where he can do some good and feed some people. Sorry Charlie!
This animal is a twelve-thousand pound predator. I don’t care how trained or tamed or domesticated you consider it to be, it’s still a predator.
Yeah, it goes against their religion to admit these whales are killers. It always has to be the trainers fault. These people are morons.
Sure, you can train a wild beast to do tricks, but it is still a beast. Id does not love you. It is not being kind to you. It doesn’t show affection for you. It is just following your commands because you feed it after it performs it’s trick. It is and always will be a beast.
I’d like to see these morons try to train these whales without always feeding them. If they are so freaking gentile, just talk them into their little circus show. Try to reason with them and let them know it’s all for a good cause. Stop giving them a big fish every time they jump through a hoop and instead just reward them with a little verbal encouragement. See how well that goes for ya!
Witnesses said the whale played with Brancheau like a toy. Authorities said that trainers trying to help her could not get into the water because Tilikum was so aggressive. They had to coax him into a smaller pool and raise him out of the water on a platform before they could free her.
Pretty gruesome.
The problem here as I see it is that our pop culture overreacts to certain things and probably underreacts to others.
How is this fundamentally any different then the case of a roofer falling off a roof while working (apparently happens a lot - roofing is actuarially a very hazardous profession) or an electric company worker frying themselves while working near high voltage lines or any number of other bad outcomes that occur in daily life?
In my mind it’s not. It’s just the Disneyfication and Oprahization of our culture makes this somehow different.
The trainer was working at a somewhat hazardous job and eventually she drew the short straw.
The difference here was that is was in front of a lot of kids, the everyone has heard of Shamu and Free Willy.
But fundamentally, it’s no different then a cop getting killed while making a traffic stop on the highway and getting clipped by a passing vehicle.
So Tilly’s basically a big kid at heart. A very big, very strong kid.
I agree. The trainers mistake was forgeting she weighed under 200 lbs. and the Critter weighed over 4000 lbs. and if it decided to thump the trainer then its game over before you can say "Free Willy"...
Note to self:
Stop training Orca’s to immediately grab person and dive while thrashing upon command signal of ‘ponytail dangling on surface of water’,...very important.
The trainers need to toss this freakin’ fish a couple of tuna... then a frag grenade. Problem solved.
See what you started? ;-)
