(Beck) From the story in todays Hollywood Reporter:
---
We wanted to make sure that it was not the Speedy of the 1950s the racist Speedy, said the comedians wife Ann Lopez, who will serve alongside him as a producer. Speedys going to be a misunderstood boy who comes from a family that works in a very meticulous setting, and hes a little too fast for what they do. He makes a mess of that. So he has to go out in the world to find what hes good at. That path becomes clearer once Speedy befriends a gun-shy race-car driver.
---
(Beck): The racist Speedy? Pardon me, but the Speedy I know from the 1950s cartoons was a hero, a champion. I would suggest the writers watch a few of the cartoons before inventing a scenario from whole cloth.

Most of the problem people have with SoTS is the “Uncle Remus” character. Particularly, in his interactions with the white people on the plantation, and in the disparity of living conditions. The thing most people forget though, is that things were really like that; while others protest that it romanticizes things too much (which may be true, since it is Disney). However, some go so far as to call Brer Rabbit racist too, even though Brer Rabbit (who is black) is constantly outwitting Fox and Bear, who are white.

Does this mean we can bring back Joe Jitsu from the Dick Tracy show, too?

>>when they became “friends.”
I remember the Simpsons episode where Marge complained to the TV station/network about violent cartoons (that’s right, she’s a cartoon character herself) and they changed it. The new Itchy and Scratchy theme became:
They share, and love, and share and share and love
Share, share, share, love, love, love
The Itchy and Scratchy show...
Kids hated it.

I remeber when he was complaining that there weren’t enough mexicans on US tv. Has he ever watched Telmundo? Those are some of the whitest mexicans I’ve ever seen, why not bitch at them? Oh yeah, he wants to see sterotypical mexicans. Racist dip shit.

It's not just cartoons. I was listening to a Nero Wolfe audiobook and there was a disclaimer in the preface, talking about how it was written in a different decade before the civil rights movement.
I wonder what disclaimers will be placed on products 50 years from now. "NOTICE: This movie was produced before incandescent light bulbs and internal combustion engines were outlawed. It is not necessary to inform the Green Police of the activities being portrayed." or "RATED NC-17 FOR MILD PORTRAYALS OF MINOR CHRISTIAN ACTIVITY"

And Mighty Mouse was a coke head. That's because said episode was directed by Ralph "Fritz the Cat" Bakshi. It was like having R. Crumb take over "Annie."

Song Of The South takes place AFTER the Civil War. Uncle Remus is a free man.

After, yes, but only shortly. Although Remus is free, he and the other workers on the plantation are still very deferential to the white family that owns the plantation, and the movie portrays him and the other blacks very stereotypically.

I’m still waiting for the movie version of Green Acres.
To: Little Pig
I'll have to take your word for it, since I've never been allowed to see it. However, I do think it's remarkable that Disney continues to milk this movie to the tune of several million dollars a year. Splash Mountain is one of the most popular attractions at their theme parks, yet we're not allowed to see the movie which inspired the ride. Disney milks "Zippedy-Do-Dah" incessantly, though we only get to see the song in remakes or truncated clips.
Even if the movie is all that bad, they could still release it with some sort of "for adult collectors - not suitable for children" label, like other 1940's material. They released this film for home viewing in Britain and Canada, so why not the USA?
