Let’s Save Public Education: A Five-Point Plan
The Open Press ^ | Feb. 17, 2010 | Bruce Deitrick Price

Posted on 02/23/2010 3:53:01 PM PST by BruceDeitrickPrice

Short press release argues that improving public schools is easier than many people think. For one thing, we don’t need more money. Here are five concrete steps for making our schools more successful: ignore the official experts; get rid of their bad ideas; rescue reading; save math; emphasize facts and knowledge.

For many decades the Education Establishment always claimed--falsely--that we must throw more money at the problem. Now Obama wants to throw ever more billions at education. When the best approach is not to ADD money but to SUBTRACT dumb ideas.

Dump administrators. Cut their salaries and increase teachers’ salaries. Ensure 80% of $$ goes to the classroom.

Put in a voucher program so that parents have a choice of where to send their children,

Eliminate the department of education,

Severely curtail the authority of state's education department,

Encourage and leave alone Home Schoolers,

Outlaw unions across the nation, but especially in education

I don’t mean any harm, but if you are a teacher in public education you know these common sense measures will NEVER gain ground.

Private school or home schooling-— these are it.

Come look at my school district where federal money has been showered on us ( & of course, as we hear thru the very reliable grapevine, into the pockets of the administration-— something I find completely believeable.) & see if it’s done any good.

There is no accountability. They give these corrupt administartions all the money and all the power. And if you dare to question anything, you will sleep w/ the fishes jobwise....

I'm starting a new nonprofit NGO, AUSSS: Americans United for Separation of School and State. The best thing that can happen to public education is to privatize it.

Let’s not. Public education is irredeemably corrupt. Defund and disband the NEA. Separation of school and state.

Five Steps:
1. End the involvement of all teacher unions.
2. End all Federal programs and close the Federal Dept of Education.
3. End all "Zero Tolerance" policies, and initiate programs to get more parents into the buildings, including as (very-low-pay, possibly based on need) classroom assistants.
4. End all truancy laws and compulsory attendance.
5. Allow parents to choose which school to send their children to (within X miles, provide transportation... those schools booked beyond capacity, lower X by Y%... if still beyond capacity, initiate an extrance exam, top scores get choice)

90+% of all problems go away immediately. Academic achievement scores go up instantly. Schools are no longer at the mercy of incorrigibles. Parents have the freedom to change schools (within reason) without changing addresses. Small businesses could pop up providing transport to schools that are worth the extra drive and cost. Schools are no longer at the mercy of Federal morons. Bad teachers are no longer propped up by even worse unions. Teacher pay is no longer tied to mere endurance. Professionals might once again be treated like professionals. Heck, in that case, I'd consider going back. Ahh, to dream.

Get rid of the unions

I personally think they should get rid of school districts. Just let the schools govern themselves. I like the idea of charter schools everywhere.

Something also needs to be done about special education. Kids (my daughter included) that need help, don’t get what they need. Lots of money is wasted on special education. There is way, way, way too much paperwork in dealing with kids with special needs. Not sure what the solution is. I know that inclusion is not always the answer. I think some kids would be better served by going to special schools.

In a book titled Super Crunchers by Ian Ayres he writes about “Direct Instruction.”

VERY INTERESTING!

I encourage you teachers and others to learn more.
