It would be good form if he did so, then he could take the naturalization oath and "abjure all other allegiances" and perhaps that might cover any OTHER citizenships he might have (Indonesian)...though he'd never be at the level of a natural born citizen, at least it's a step in the right direction!

Actually, for a long time people born in the US were often not citizens... even under the simple precedents you cite.

In Sparta, the Helots were not Spartan, under the Early British kings the Welsh and Anglo-Saxons were not citizens. Nor were Americans of african descent or North American natives considered of US citizenship...

That is why laws can be updated, and have been.
