WASHINGTON -- On an otherwise quiet Saturday at the White House, there was quite a sight along the driveway: the careful unearthing of two trees to make way for some construction underneath the front lawn.
People walking along Pennsylvania Avenue saw two enormous cranes stationed just outside the West Wing. One crane lifted away a sugar maple tree that had been planted by President Ronald Reagan in 1984. And then a large linden tree, planted by the National Park Service in 1979, was also hauled out of the ground.

Slideshow pictures show the entire side of the building has scaffolding at the exterior. Must be some significant refurbishment going on there, not just electrical upgrades. No “tighten the belt” tactics there.

Maybe I’m overreacting, but removing a tree planted by Reagan REALLY pisses me off. Perhaps there’s an installation in the works to ward off would be threats to Obama’s coup before the 2012 election?
No conspiracy theory here...Good for the administration to save the trees for replanting after the construction’s complete. I half expected them to destroy them given that an “evil Republican president” had them planted.
Just imagine the handwringing had W done this.
Or perhaps he is preparing for his Marxist revolution and takeover of government.
The constant “we can’t get anything done in Congress” is very worrisome. An excuse for a takeover “in the name of the People!”
