I’m sure none of these armed suspects either are actually guilty or will elude capture once allowed to vanish.

Wow, that's not going to encourage criminals to carry weapons and drive fast... :-/

How about a different policy, one that might actually reduce crime? Something like:

From now on, we are going to take all the money we would've spent on sensitivity training, diversity training, language training etc. and redirect it. Said funds will be applied to upgraded weapons, body armor, and range time for all officers. Additionally, the marksmanship requirements for all officers will be raised. These actions will back our new policy of "shoot immediately, shoot to kill" any armed criminal who does not disarm after one, and only one verbal warning. If the suspect is threatening anyone with a weapon, no warning will be given.

This kind of policy should reduce legal costs, and recidivism. Yes, there may be some initial additional risk to the general public. But after the criminal element has been dissuaded and/or eliminated, overall crime will go down.

“The new guidelines.... “

That’s as old as dirt.

I am starting to miss the “fleeing felon rule”.

"Yes, there may be some initial additional risk to the general public."

With all due respect - DON'T SHOOT ME - I believe having fewer armed criminals on the streets will REDUCE risk to the general public. But, you probably knew that.

The police should only suppress the law abiding. For example, if a person walking down the street is accosted by a robber and the police intervene, the robber should be released, the person robbed arrested and sued in civil court.

Sheriff's deputies in Los Angeles County are being directed to avoid chasing armed suspects under a new policy to reduce shootings by deputies.

So then the private citizens are to shoot these armed criminals when they encounter them?

Same as private citizens are the ones who are maimed by run away drivers in car chases (police can't wreck the stolen vehicle as they would be "accountable", let the crook wreck it into someone ELSE'S car).

Disband the police force if it is only going to serve to observe and write tickets.

True enough. But what makes you think that crooks in general, and LA County crooks in particular, are gonna be giving up their weapons any time soon?

That will happen if the police continue to prosecute the pursuit to an apprehension, and not, as the associated article suggested, introduce a policy to suspend the pursuit.
