NEW YORK (Reuters) -- A peppy Scottish terrier known as Sadie was crowned the nation's top dog on Tuesday, winning Best in Show at the prestigious Westminster Kennel Club championship.
Sadie, a jet-black four-year-old bitch formally known as Ch Roundtown Mercedes of Maryscot, displayed the ideal combination of breeding standards and confidence, beating out 2,500 entrants at the 134-year-old dog show.
"She's the total package," marveled Elliot Weiss, of Eagle, Idaho, who judged the Best in Show round before a cheering, capacity crowd at Madison Square Garden.
"This is the complete dog ... That's what you want a Scottie to look like," said Weiss.

That's why my wife and I call them terrierists. They're way too 'busy'.
Hounds in general have a particular odor to them. Doesn't matter how many times you bathe them, either.
I was saying that in jest.
I don’t know anything about dogs (I’m not an animal person in the slightest).
Thats what my boys say.
They are 100% pure breed GoodBoys.
I don’t know why they always have shows for these fancy dogs. They should have a dog show good ole boys. My boy would win hands down.
It’s why I don’t have terriers. I just love Border Terriers, but I could not live with a dog that busy and terriery!
Me, too. I was pulling for the poodle. I’m just upset with the AKC for not allowing multi-color poodles to show. All the other breeds have them, but not the poodle. I have a gorgeous tri-color minature that is not allowed to be shown in AKC.
Performance events. I believe AKC is opening some of them up to mixed breeds. Dog shows (conformation) are not exactly beauty contests. They are supposed to be judging how closely the dog comes to the written standard for that breed. However, people being what they are, that’s not always what happens.
On the other hand, if you wanted to start an organization having beauty pageants for dogs, I bet you would get a lot of takers. :)
It’s not the AKC, it is the Poodle club. They write the standards.
I thought the whippet was the best.
I had previously owned a purebred, but little “Spike Lee” is a total love junkie and has found his soul mates in me and mine. We have only taken “rescue” dogs, as we try to love those who were not. In every case, I wish I'd had them from weening and wished I could have made another one. My last poodle was with me for 18 years. He will always be my true puppy love. Rescued from a shelter after being tortured and thrown down a storm sewer in the City.
Had three vets tell me to put him down, but I couldn't. Finally took him to an old “horse doctor” country vet I'd known from my youth — together, after six months, we brought him through. The little guy didn't know how to die and I wouldn't let him find out. ;-)
It’s funny, the things bred into a breed. I now have two Akita/Lab mixes - brothers from the same litter. One is more Akita, one more lab. The Lab is much smaller, fetches and acts like a goof - bounces all over the place and is extremely affectionate.
The Akita is much bigger, much more standoffish and protective. And yep they like to fight.
I’ve never had a toy breed. The older I get, the bigger my dogs get! At this rate, when I’m really up there I’ll probably end up with a mastiff or something.
Well it wouldn’t be a beauty pageant per se... it would be for goodboys.
For instance, some of the catagories would be;
Longest drool hanger.
Longest timed “scratch off” (I call it a burnout) after a good poop.
Most intense greeting (such as when owner comes home from work)
Most intense leg jerking during a belly rub.
Fastest timed hotdog weiner swallowing.
Overall goofiness.
Overall loyalty.
LOL
The UKC allows them.
The UKC is not the AKC. Take it up with the poodle club. I have no idea why they chose to go that route. Perhaps there was originally not a gene for spotting in the gene pool so they felt that any dogs with spotting were not purebred poodle. I don’t know.
