The libertarian criticism of the GWOT is a criticism on how much the state expanded under Bush, and the mistakes made in our name in Afghanistan, Iraq and Gitmo

I supported the Iraq War, and would do it over again if asked. I think there needs to be an aggressive foreign policy on our part

However, the amount of money that has been spent, along with the absurd expansion of the state since 2001, not to mention that reducing entitlements (medicare, medicaid and SSI) along with the military is the only way to reduce our national debt long term.

Essentially the argument is that the GWOT has wasted money and expanded government, things libertarians oppose, and conservatives used to oppose

Every Libertarian I have ever known has been arrogant and self-righteous. They have all emphasized legalizing drugs. They have all favored legal prostitution. They have all favored open borders -- Hey! Mexicans! C'mon over!!

Oh, yeah ... when they sit down and think really, really hard, they kinda favor reduction in federal spending too. Ya know, if there's time for that in between parties.

Libertarians have a fortress America point of view and want us to have the foreign policy of Switzerland. They essentially want America to keep to ourselves and not meddle in the affairs of any other nation and not be involved in wars. Ron Paul articulates this position pretty well. I personally disagree with this view but it is a view held by many of the founders. On economic issues and especially sending the libertarians are right on which is why if you heard Ron Paul he makes all the sense in the world on fiscal issues.

Libertarians are also pretty much open border types which is another issue conservatives disagree with them on. They are also pro-choice and very liberal on social issues. I would describe them as conservatives that are liberal on social issue and want a foreign policy like Switzerland.

Truthfully I think libertarians tend to believe in societal freedom even more that Conservatives, the problem is that there need to be measures on some social liberties as not all people are able to handle completed freedom to do what they want.

It’s my opinion that lots of folks can handle smoking pot responsibly however many cannot. Especially at risk are our youth.

Conservatives tend to reign in these Liberteen tendencies.
Liberteens are not the same as liberals. at least not in the modern political climate.

There are some who call themselves Left-Libertarians who think anarchy will help bring about the perfect classless utopia.

Everyone else calls them nutcases

You can see my freeper page for some info if you like, or read up on 'Classical Liberalism', which defines much of what eventually became 20th century 'conservatism', sans the social aspects of it: -
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Classical_liberalism

Some will suggest that it means you support all the principles of the 'Libertarian Party' which is not necessarily correct. Though the party does share some of the same philosophies as small 'l' libertarians.

You will also likely get several completely moronic responses.

IMHO, libertarians are the biggest reason our country is in the mess it is. They have ruined the GOP with their idiotic, childish economic theories. Think of a spoiled child that cries “me” all the time, and you have a libertarian. At heart, they are anarchists, but they will not admit it. Limited gov’t to them is “no” gov’t except what may directly benefit them. Not a happy thing for an entire country.

Much of their nonsense was brought on by Ayn Rand, who supposedly was not a libertarian. Their “free market” ideas have led to foolish deregulation of the financial markets with the disasterous results you see now.Greenspan, a disciple of Ayn Rand, may have had an epiphany or not when he said he had wrongly relied on enlightened self interest of banks.

The libertarians are unable to get much traction in elections so they leeched onto the Republicans and turned them into a party of economic morons and government nihilists. Think Phil Gramm deregulating derivatives. I have coined a phrase for them, LICE, (Libertarians Infiltrating Conservative Entities).

Whenever you hear the “initiation of force” bs, that is libertarians. Imagine conservatives disagreeing with a military draft, and then compare that to the libertarian reaction. That is the difference. Conservatives believe in responsibilities. Libertarians really don’t. Libertarians think the 1800s were the Golden Ages in America, and things like minimum wages, wage and hour laws, child labor laws, worker’s comp, social security, FDA, and medicare are horrible intrusions of gov’t power.

While they may pose as rugged individualists, they are really insecure little children who belong back in Europe when they had lords and ladies to run things. Mention taxing the rich and they wet their short pants out of fear that there will be no rich person to give them a job or take care of them.

Thankfully, America was not founded by Libertarians. If it had, no settlers would have headed West, because there were no rich folks waiting on the prairies and coasts to take care of them. Real American don’t need no rich person to take care of them, and give them jobs, and run things for them. They do it themselves and hopefully get wealthier in the process.

This guy nails it on the head:

http://www.zompist.com/libertos.html

The main reason why most people call themselves libertarians, is because it starts off with “liber” and we think “liberty”. At least that’s my opinion.

parsy, who got carried away again

The two issues that all the Libertarians I have met have in common are: legalize dope and leave my money alone. While a Conservative and a Libertarian would agree on controlling spending by the government and reducing taxation, it is on the issues of morality and foreign relations (read: isolationism) that distinguish them most clearly. A Libertarian adheres very strongly to John Stuart Mill’s view of liberty, namely, I should be allowed to do anything that I want as long as it does not infringe upon the rights of others. The government has no right to stop individuals from doing things harmful to themselves. If I want to snort meth or smoke marijuana, that is my business. People should be free to buy dope, to be a prostitute, or eat their pet. There is no sense of societal responsibility. I would say that Libertarians believe that religion has no place in government or society in general.

Small Government plain and simple and limit Federal powers to what is outlined in the Constitution.

It's both economic freedom and social freedom. Government doesn't regulate too far on your right to make a living nor your right to live how you choose.

The common libertarian, and liberal, argument that the founding fathers would never commit troops to an undeclared war, nor involve themselves in ‘foreign entanglements’ is untenable in the light of a few historical facts. First is the Qusi War with the French, fought with John Adams as President. “Power must be opposed to power, and interest to interest.” John Adams, originator of the idea of “checks and balances.”

Second is the Barbary War, undeclared, fought under Jefferson.

The War of 1812 was fought under Madison using privateers extensively. Think Blackwater.

Good luck.

John Stossel claims the Libertarian Label.

If he were the face, Not the Stoners, I am ok.

I am righteously conservative. I have a libertarian bent.

All that to say, I am EXTREMELY CONSERVATIVE when it comes to Government. I am radically (I MEAN RADICALLY LIBERAL) in my personal lifestyle.

By some standards I am a libertarian.
