ethro Tull has announced an eight-city North American run in June. The band will kick off their dates on June 4th at Miami's Bayfront Park Amphitheater and wrap things up on June 20th in Highland Park, Illinois at the Martin Theatre At Ravinia. Along the way, Tull will play a two-night Canadian stop on June 18th in Toronto, and June 19th in Windsor, Ontario.
Frontman Ian Anderson says that above all else Tull's shows make for a great night out: [ Click to listen if you have a backstage pass] "It's a party atmosphere; people are relaxed. You know, they want to hear the old hits, they want to hear the, you know, new stuff, they just want to have fun. And for us, it's a good opportunity to play them the whole, the whole Jethro Tull history. In a two-hour show, we try and cover all the ground, from the old stuff through to the new songs. And, and we have a lot of fun. You just wouldn't want to shake hands with us afterwards, 'cause we're like bars of soap -- we're so wet with sweat and sticky."

When I play it back in my mind, I hear possible 7/4. Yes, I think it's 7/4 -- COOL! I never noticed that! Thanks for pointing it out. Next time I hear it on the radio I'm really going to listen carefully.
Is that Lucia Micarelli with Ian? I saw them in the orchestral concert in Saratoga CA at the Mountain Winery. Tremendous concert. Loved Budapest. :) Oh yeah, and Locomotive Breath, my personal favorite.

Excellent post, finny -- I've been trying to explain my own music tastes for years to people who just can't comprehend, I would describe some songs/composers as "I love you, you love me, A-B-C, 1-2-3", it's boring, it's rote, the three-chord rock and singers who cannot enunciate properly so that I almost have no idea what they are singing, what the song is about.
My hub introduced me to Tull, he saw them live in Jackson, MS for the Thick As A Brick tour, 72, Martin's wife a gal from down south, (at least at that time, don't know if they are still married), hub says it was one of the greatest shows he's ever enjoyed! Martin's solo album where he plays each tune on a different guitar, incredible.
I love the medieval quality to Tull's music, I find it timeless.

The first one is Barlow (I think), next is John Evan with the longish red hair, then guitarist Martin Barre, then David Palmer I think playing piano with his son on clarinet. Sounds like Mozart? Finally at the end Ian Anderson.

Martin Barre, his original guitarist is still with him to my knowledge. One of my all time faves.
Remember "Tubular Bells," the theme for "The Exorcist"? I think that tune has 13 beats to the measure.

Sure, it's hugely enjoyable for partying and it's All American and God knows I've sure enjoyed a lot of it and danced myself loopy to it in my younger wilder days! But the truth is ... a player who can only play three-chord, two-beat rock is incapable of sitting in and jamming with a jazz band; he'd be lost in the complexity of the chord changes and time signatures. On the flip side, a jazz player can sit in with any rock band in the world.
But there are so many players and bands categorized and "rock" that I consider really closer to jazz: Grateful Dead, Carlos Santana, Jethro Tull, Mark Knopfler (Knopfler is a WONDERFUL musician) come to mind right off ... lots of groups, actually, produced music that was a lot more interesting (and which took more skill to write and perform) than the ABC stuff. Pink Floyd, Queen, the Beatles, for example. And then there was the whole Earth Wind and Fire (NOT disco! Thank you very much!), and Motown soul, music that was SO-O-O really deserving of respect. In retrospect, there was a lot of good music ... but there was a terrific amount of boring crap as well, and since it was easier to produce and easier to play, it's what we heard more often.
But what was really sad was when some 19-year-old kid who'd been playing the guitar for five years and knew three chords but who had a top-ten hit, was celebrated as a "great musician" on the cover of mags and in pop culture, while truly accomplished guitarists, like Phil Upchurch, remained unknown. I hear junk stuff put out by kids and I'm supposed to listen and be impressed ... and see other people impressed ... when I'm thinking, "But, it didn't take any real skill to do that!"
