Pit bull kills girl, 5, in Mississippi

TERRY, Miss., Feb. 12 (UPI) -- A 5-year-old girl was killed Friday in an attack by a neighborhood pit bull in Terry, Miss., her grandmother says.

Mable Bingham said the body of her granddaughter, Anataisa, was found lying in a ditch Friday after the attack by the dog, which the Hinds County Sheriff's Department took into custody, The Jackson (Miss.) Clarion-Ledger reported.

"It's so sad," Bingham said of the death of her granddaughter, whom she raised since birth.

Bingham said the girl was playing in the snow outside when the attack took place. Additional details of the attack were not released.

The US Army K-9 Corps had to “Foo Foo” the dogs to get

them to attack the face/head area,,,

It seems that a pit will always go for the face...

It’s not just temperament, but also jaw strength. A poodle and a pit bull could both snap and attack someone and clamp down with all their might, but the results wouldn’t be anywhere near the same.

Interesting. I wonder if that's been confirmed by any reaonsably systematic research. Different dog breeds definitely have very different instincts, and this could be an example. When I was a kid, my family would go out to a cabin we had in the woods, and had to drive by a farm to get there. There was some sort of herding dog that lived on the farm, and it *always* tried to herd our car. It just instinctively ran out in front of anything that was moving in a linear direction. Fortunately for the dog, it was a narrow buumpy gravel road, so no speeding going on there.

Why ANYONE would own a pitbull or rottie is beyond me. I've always had dogs. Pits and rotts are ticking timebombs. There's a story nearly every day how they tore into someone.

The only problem I ever had was a child getting a big thump from a tail. And the kid loved it.

My Mom was bitten by a Lab. Still has nerve impairment in her left hand.

The dog belonged to my paternal grandfather. For whatever reason, the dog was allowed to live to it's natural end.

RC, sorry but you are wrong.
I'm a retired military handler/trainer and I have been training stock dogs all my life.
A border collie is bred to work things that move. We put young pups on a “heard of ducks” when they are a couple months old to see how good they are. Most of them will try and work even at that early age. This has nothing to do with nurture and everything to do with nature. The pups have had very little human contact at that point in their lives. These dogs have been bred for the working instinct for several hundred years. It is in them from the day they are born.
Pits have been bred for several hundred years to bite and fight. It is a bred in instinct and is there from the day they are born. Many things may influence this instinct but it is a part of their genetics and that physiology can not be altered. For some others out there yes other dogs do cause harm to people sometimes. BUT/// Pits make up about nine percent of the pet dog population in this country but commit sixty percent of the K-9 homicides in out country each year. The numbers speak the truth. Pit bulls are not like other dogs. The attack and kill children at a much higher rate than any other dog breed in this country. In fact they attack and kill at a rate that is higher than all other dog breeds combined. I have one question for everyone. What does a pit bull do that another breed of dog can not do??? So, why do we still put up with them???

That is hard for me to believe. My black Lab has never even taken a snort at anyone. He is 120 lbs and lets some of my small nieces and nephews tug at his ears. He likes the attention.

All pits are not bad, but many of them are and you stick your head in the sand. You seem to be defending the dog that killed this little girl. You have issues.

latest news,,,

If you search by the year there are lists of the number

of bites for that year,,,

IIRC about 60%+ of people killed/mauled are by pits...
