Would a forum to invite newbies to ask questions help increase participation?
Ooh, a Dear John letter. Yeah, that’s the ticket!
“Just drop John a note. Tell him you dont like his software. Let me know how that works out.”
OK, but I’ll phrase it a little differently.
What is the approved method for dropping John a note?
Thanks in advance for helping out a noob.
“What initial point?”

His name is his ping. Just like this. If you want it private, send him a FReep mail.
Nope, you get tough by fighting, scraping and being called names for about 6 years, then you ain’t a n00b to most folks around here.
I suggest a gift shop!!!
Post a vanity thread, n00b, and we'll fix THAT!
“issues his orders “
What orders?
Very nice.
I voted for Perot, too. ;)
I love the Constitution! Also, long walks on the beach, curling up with a good book, FReeping, children, Rush Limbaugh, and kittens. Turnoffs: liberal ideas, socialism, communism, most politicians, bad attitudes, and men who look like the “Mac” in the Apple ads.
I get it.You want FR to look just like DU so you don’t have to learn new site geography?
PS: All anyone needs to know is, I’m in charge.
Your in charge? Where did Charles go?
So easy, a caveman could do it.
I like poking dead things with a stick.
"My mother? Let me tell you about my mother."
Don't think there's an approved method, but just send a PM to him.
I guess you know why most are giving you a hard time by now. I'm glad you haven't left due to the ribbing. It's a good man that has ideas, especially when it comes to drawing in new visitors to this site (this cause).
Be respectful that some folks have been here for awhile and tend to become comfortable with the terms and quirks of this site. The interface is, by now, second-nature to them. We all learned how to use it. Hell, all I know about HTML I learned from posting here! As the others have said, no one likes the new guy telling how things should be run. Was just a tactical mistake on your part I think. The overall goal of getting more new people to this site is a noble one and should not be abandoned.
This site was around long before every Tom, Dick and Harry news site had a 'comments' section after every news story. When I joined, you could post full articles from any new site without restriction, after which people would post their comments. Live TV events had 'live threads' (and still do). This place was one of the first to offer that sort of internet experience (at least that I knew of). That functionality's been restricted over the years, but the culture here has grown and thrived; new flies still come to the flytrap. The software seems to hold its own, with the exception here and there. I'd suggest that you list specific change requests to John Robinson, rather than "let's switch to PHP tomorrow!" type of things ;P
Send your suggestions to the guys that run this place and good luck to you!
