He said he burned small items to keep warm but eventually decided to brave the cold to search for existence. Somehow, I think he was really searching for assistance. Sounds like UPI is hiring illiterates these days.
Also note: "Rescue dog," in this instance, probably means that the dog had been rescued by an animal rescue organization (after it had been abandoned), and the dog was being transported by this man to his new home. These organizations often find people to volunteer to drive rescued animals for segments of a long-distance trip, so that no one has to end up driving the animal all the way across several states.

The story is also bylined: "Dulce, Ind.", and there's no such place (Dulce is in NM, as the article says). UPI messed up the story pretty badly. The UPI editor should stop bringing those little silver flasks to work.

It could be a dog rescued from being put to sleep.

The dog was probably wondering how well that was working out when he was trapped under snow, in a car, drinking Mountain Dew with a crazy man.

decided to brave the cold to search for existence. Dude was on mescaline.

He must’ve been ready for that 32 oz steak at the Big Texan and I’ll bet the dog was too.

This week ? We got a bit over an inch late Monday evening, but because the temps were RISING as it got into overnight, it turned from snow to sleet to rain and washed a lot of it away by Tuesday morning (they still cancelled school as a precaution, since while I get my street cleared swiftly as an emergency vehicle primary route, some sections of NW Davidson County are rural and the roads there can be treacherous and slow to clear and melt). The sun has melted all but about 85-90% by today. Between Tuesday and the stuff from almost 2 weeks ago, they’ve already used up the snow days for the year. We don’t get all that much snow as we used to in the ‘70s and ‘80s, so that was a rare event the other week getting that much.
