Man Survives Four Days in Snow-Trapped Car (Survives on Mountain Dew)
UPI ^ | 2/8/10

An Indiana man lost for four days after his car became lodged in deep snow said he survived on Mountain Dew and mountain snow.

Jason Pede, 31, said he was on his way from Dulce, N.M., to Aspen, Colo., on a rescue dog delivery when his Lincoln Navigator became lodged in deep snow on a small country road off Highway 114 near Saguache, Colo., KMGH-TV, Denver, reported Monday.

Pede said he stayed in the car, surviving on a diet of Mountain Dew and snow, and found his electronic communication devices were not functioning in the weather. He said he burned small items to keep warm but eventually decided to brave the cold to search for existence.

Pede was found Sunday morning walking into Amarillo, Texas. He said he felt healthy but hungry and looked forward to reuniting with his family.

The dog, an Australian Shepherd, was found in Pede's car and taken to an Aspen vet for treatment.

Hello?! The guy had a rescue dog with him? Shouldn’t this be a situation that rescue dogs come in handy? Should the rescue dog have rescued him??

Do St. Bernards have Mountain Dew in those little barrels they carry around their necks?

This is goofy. Amarillo, TX is a long way from Saguache, CO and 4 days later he is found there?

He must have “beamed” over to Amarillo.

Vehicle Emergency Kit: Mountain Dew?

As the snow continues to pile up today, we want to make sure you are stocked up on essentials: toilet paper, bread, batteries... and Mountain Dew?

A 31-year-old Indiana man survived for three days in his SUV stuck in deep snow in Colorado, keeping himself hydrated with snow and Mountain Dew. Jason Sede was driving from Dulce (New Mexico) to Pueblo (Colorado) to deliver an Australian Shepherd rescue dog. He planned to drive through Aspen in order to pick up another animal delivery there.

But he never made it to Aspen. Pede, of Chesterton (Indiana), said a local had told him about a shortcut to the resort town through the Rio Grande National Forest. But Pede was unfamiliar with the roads, and he got lost and stuck in the white-out conditions.

Pede and the dog stayed in the heated car to keep warm, drinking a couple cans of Mountain Dew, a bottle of water, and snow that Pede melted with a fire he made, according to the Denver Post.

But when the fire was out and the last of his gasoline was gone on Sunday morning, Pede knew he had to look for help. He wasn't sure he'd survive the night in single-digit temperatures.

Leaving the dog with the Lincoln Navigator, Pede walked seven miles before he came across another road. He used a flashlight to signal passing cars for help before collapsing.

Fortunately, Pede will be able to safely go home to his wife and three children.

And the dog was also eventually delivered unharmed to Pueblo.

Let this be a reminder. There is no shortcut to safety.

I think rescue dogs find the person with their great sense of smell, but beyond being used as part of a rescure effort with human searchers the rescue dog can’t actually help the victim much.

Well, at least he didn’t eat the dog.

I don’t get it either. The story says he was on his way from Dulce, NM to Aspen, CO, but was found walking near Amarillo. Amarillo is 8 hours away from Dulce by car according to Google maps. Poor writing or something is funny here.

We’ll probably find more frozen animal worshippers and other oddball city folks thawing out up here during the run-off in a month or two.

Wait a min. Somethings not right. It’s 500 miles from Amarillo Tx to Saguache, Colo. I mean come on. He walked? It doesn’t make any sense. He would have to go through the Oklahoma Panhandle and pass a bunch of big towns... I cry B.S. He was abducted by aliens. Kitty aliens who didn’t want him to deliver the “rescue” dot.

“he decided to brave the cold to search for existance”.

Just off the top of my head, poor writing.

Being from Colo., you know how the San Luis Valley can be treacherous in winter and to get to Dulce from Saguache, you have to go over some passes.

I think the reporter on this version screwed up. I checked some of the other versions, and none mentioned Amarillo.

I had exactly the same thought. The story is also bylined: "Dulce, Ind.", and there's no such place (Dulce is in NM, as the article says).

UPI messed up the story pretty badly. Here's the original story from KMGH:

http://www.thedenverchannel.com/news/22499403/detail.html

It says that three people from Amarillo found him Sunday morning as he walked out.
