The Who halftime show
As seen on CBS | 8 February 2010 | Self

There are conservatives, including some of us here on Free Republic, that consider the song "We don't get fooled again!" to have a conservative theme.

The Who saved that for their final performance last night. Did anyone else note the extraordinary amount of cheering from the audience the first time they sang the refrain? Did you also catch Daltry's final line:

"DON'T YOU GET FOOLED AGAIN!!!" ?

THE WHO-WON’T GET FOOLED AGAIN (LYRICS)

We’ll be fighting in the streets
With our children at our feet
And the morals that they worship will be gone
And the men who spurred us on
Sit in judgment of all wrong
They decide and the shotgun sings the song

I’ll tip my hat to the new constitution
Take a bow for the new revolution
Smile and grin at the change all around me
Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday
And I’ll get on my knees and pray
We don’t get fooled again
Don’t get fooled again

Change it had to come
We knew it all along
We were liberated from the fall that’s all
But the world looks just the same
And history ain’t changed
‘Cause the banners, they all flown in the last war

I’ll tip my hat to the new constitution
Take a bow for the new revolution
Smile and grin at the change all around me
Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday
And I’ll get on my knees and pray
We don’t get fooled again
Don’t get fooled again
No, no!

I’ll move myself and my family aside
If we happen to be left half alive
I’ll get all my papers and smile at the sky
For I know that the hypnotized never lie

Do ya?

There’s nothing in the street
Looks any different to me
And the slogans are replaced, by-the-bye
And the parting on the left
Is now the parting on the right
And the beards have all grown longer overnight

I’ll tip my hat to the new constitution
Take a bow for the new revolution
Smile and grin at the change all around me
Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday
Then I’ll get on my knees and pray
We don’t get fooled again
Don’t get fooled again
No, no!

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!

Meet the new boss
Same as the old boss

Agree....even Pete Townshend agreed quoted as saying, “the people were here to watch football, not us.”

I thought Karrie Underwood did a great job singing it.

She's cute and has a nice voice, and I very much appreciated that she sang it straight and didn't do all of those silly vocal gymnastics, but she was off-key a few times.

“Having a band from 1969 perform at halftime is like having Fred Waring and the Pennsylvanians perform their greatest hits of 1925 at halftime of the Jets-Colts SB III.
Think about it.”

In terms of chronology yes, but stylistically no. Many of the songs by the Who have a timeless quality (at least in terms of rock music), and sound like they could have been written yesterday. My 16-year-old daughter became aware of some of the music from the Who via the TV show CSI, and she was amazed to learn that the song “Who are You” (which she loves) was written a little over 30 years ago, and Baba O’Riley was written almost 40 years ago.

Folks that are griping about the Who's live performance just are griping to be griping. Ever hear Live at Leeds? Woodstock? I would not consider either one of those performances stellar. When one goes to a live performance, one should not expect a perfect rendition of the artists work. Shoot, Taylor Swift is another example...live at the Grammys she sucked big time. Her studio albums are fine. There are other performers that nail the performance every time. The Beatles at Shea Stadium sucked, but it was live....

Too many of the young folks haven't a clue on a live performance excellence. Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Bob Wills, Woody Herman, and even Lawrence Welk put on good live shows but that was another genre and another era when the artists had to get it right the first time. The Kingston Trio was another excellent live act. I am just saying, cut Pete and Roger some slack. They are not the same without Entwistle and Moon but the nostalgia was there. No one can dispute the studio albums excellence. I was happy to see them perform..it may be the last time we see them...they are not youngsters.

I don’t think Little River Band is a big enough group for the Super Bowl.

How about Wayne Newton instead?

I liked it and so did my 19 year old son. :-) Of course they do not sound like they did when we were rockin, but I give them credit for actually singing. Poor Daltry was winded towards the end.

We are all getting older. I watched an ‘oldies’ show on PBS. Eric Burdon had the whole tropical thing goin’ on. He was dressed like Jimmy Buffet’s father.

Regardless, it is good to go down Memory Lane. Did you ever think we would look back at the 60’s and say “Life was so much simpler then.”

I saw the LRB in Memphis the summer of 1978....2nd best concert I have ever seen live. I saw the Stones that summer too....LRB just tore up the stage...They were the opening act for Buffet and it was anticlimactic after the LRB left the stage.

Anybody else out there who might be able to do a Super Bowl show who isn't oversexed, too young to appeal to a wide audience, or a one-hit wonder?

How about Bob Dylan? Now that would clear the stadium out.

Of course, Bob is All-American (I'm not being sarcastic).

WHen I worked in Syracuse one of our patients was a backup singer back in the day. Once he brought in his scrapbook to show me his pictures.

He told me how the mob was involved in those groups. Quite fascinating. (ie Cars abandoned in the desert with a body in the back.) He was with the Four Seasons for a short while; said me they were mob owned. (note to all: HIS opinion. It was 15 years ago. He has prolly died since then)

It was Ringo’s son Zak Starkey. I thought he looked very much like Ringo so I googled him.
He’s been with the WHO since 1994.

Music before the game, National Anthem and halftime were , as per usual, lousy and pathetic.

Why is it that no other country in the world has singers try to personalize their national anthems the way singers in this country mutilate our National Anthem?

Ever hear a game between Toronto and a US baseball team?

"Oh, Canada" is sung EXACTLY the way it was written and intended. Then they get to the "Star Spangled Banner" and it's "OH-whoa, whoa, whoa, saaaa-haaay can youu-who-who-uuuu seeeee?"

Thank God for the remote and the mute.

What does that say about today’s music when we have to go back to the early 70’s to dredge up ‘The Who’. At least the Rolling Stones had some other hit songs scattered through several decades. Concerts now are so much about the visual gimmicks, stage theatrics etc... the music suffers from it! IMO.

Well, they certainly had plenty of visual gimmicks there last night, eh? Of course, it *was* the Super Bowl. My husband said because of all the "fireworks," it wasn't quite as important that their older voices weren't right on key, but they did a nice job. We were joking that instead of doing a couple hits from a bong, they were probably taking a few pulls from some holistic high energy drink before coming on stage. But you're right about today's music. I'm wanting Fleetwood Mac to come back for next year's Super Bowl. I've watched "The Dance" on TV probably thirty times.
