You should be able to Start>Run “cmd” or “command”. As for recognizing the drive, it should. It’s just a USB device, and the device itself handles the logic of transferring data to/from the computer.

7 handles USB drives just fine. It also manages wireless networking much better than XP.

While we are discussing Windows 7, I acquired a new ‘puter with Windows 7 and find it only marginally better than VISTA was. I purchased the MS Office Home & Student package which includes WORD, PowerPoint, etc. and had it installed by The Geek Squad. For one thing, if I receive an email with a PPS attachment, it will not open the attachment. There are other disappointments which I won’t bore you with. But I wish I could just go back to Windows XP and be happy again.

Thank you for your indulgence.......and help......maybe.

Is Windows 7 any good? I’m going to run Fusion on my new imac, had a question and called apple, question about getting a different mouse and keyboard. The tech was helpful and sensed my frustration trying to make the transition. She recommended to go ahead and install Fusion (oh I asked if I could return it since I decided not to use it, no, I’d opened the box). Then explaining about Windows XP updates to catch up on since 2003, she recommended I get Win 7. See it’s about $200 but makes sense, will keep running Win XP on my pc.

Another incident, I had trouble with IE8 on my pc, don’t use it very much, annoyed that it forces me to open to msnbc, there is a fix but tricky. It lost my top bar and my task bar, I couldn’t get out of it and did the ctrl-alt-del. I thought maybe the last update caused it, never had that problem before. After a couple sessions of that, I decided to try f11 thinking it might somehow be in full screen mode. That did the trick. But if the cat did it, why wouldn’t it be back to normal when I rebooted?

My floppy drive broke way back when, and my only option now since I’m sol is to buy an external one or take in to the shop (not worth it) which I don’t want to do (buy stuff I don’t absolutely need), may be able to find someone to burn my important ones to CD or DVD.

I’ve fixed things but never tried messing with anything in the tower or I could replace with a new one myself. The tower is too heavy and too many cords to mark. Usually if I must, I yank cords and manage to remember where most of them go and can get out the quick start guide.

What do you mean by “Run DOS”?

Are you saying you want to boot DOS from a bootable disk in a USB floppy drive?

Just plugged a USB floppy drive into my Win 7 machine. It recognized it and was able to access the files on an old disk.

Run DOS? Depends on what you want to do. Run an old DOS program or use a command line interface?

The suggestion of using something like FreeDos in a virtual machine is your best bet. Otherwise, try booting into DOS from an old floppy. You won’t be able to access your NTFS hard disk, but any machine should run DOS to some degree.

I recently installed Windows 7. It sees all my USB devices just fine, with the exception of two USB drives that worked under Vista and XP. They are called Pico drives, made by Super Talent.
