Kahr 380. Opinions? (Handgun Vanity)
2/3/10 | Self

Posted on 02/03/2010 1:37:59 PM PST by scottdeus12

Hi all, don't know if you've seen my previous threads, but I'm in the market for a conceal/carry (pocket) handgun....thanks much for your awesome advice.

I've almost landed on the new Kahr 380 for a variety of reasons...mostly the size (I know I'd pocket-carry everywhere) and Kahr's reputation. The smallest 9mm I've found is still to big to pocket-carry, and the .40 is for sure way to big.

Anyway, curious to know if you have any comments or feedback.

Thanks in advance,

Scott

No - my wrists are not strong enough to hold the pistol very long ... I’ve tried shooting one shot, lower it then raise it again but after the second shot my arms quiver too much ... my personal weapon is a Beretta Tomcat in .32 cal. loaded with Glaser Safties and Hydra-shocks ....

Or a SIG .380 if you had the cash. I myself would rather carry a 9mm or a SW 38 special.

I plan on shooting my .22’s more now that the .223, .45, .44mag are more expensive, and I want to conserve them more. I’ll get to go out more and just have some extra fun.

I’ve seen some of the conversion kits, and think I’ll just buy another gun instead. I like my .38’s and they will be my primary carry, but one caliber I don’t have is the .357.

Seriously, .380 ammo has always been costlier than 9mm

2 years ago it wasn't

a Colt Mustang that works

I very much like my Colt Mustang, it works great, I don't remember ever having a failure of any kind.

Also, it's small, perfect for carrying, yet fits my large hands well. Mated with a very good yet inexpensive Don Hume inside the belt holster makes just about the perfect combination for carrying.

No way.

Go with the Sig Sauer P232 for .380

It's the best .380 on the market.

the Kahr is a good choice if that’s what you’re comfortable with. I carry a Walther PPK/S and used to carry a Colt Gov’t. 380 as a back up in the days past of doing exec protection love them both!

Do you use two hands?

Have to ... I was taught the combat hold but still can't hold the gun out for more than two shots ... will have to start building up the arms a bit .... but then ....

Why anyone would want to cripple a revolver and eliminate its most accurate mode is ridiculous IMO.

That's why I bought a 638, you can see my thumb on the hammer spur. You'll have to forgive my poor trigger discipline.

I must have had a lemon, always possible with some of the quality swings Colt has had in the last decades.

Did ok trading it in on a Winchester 42.

I think these and similar high-quality, light-weight alloy frame 5-shot revolvers with spurless hammers that are still thumb-cockable are the ideal concealed-carry weapon for the average non-gun-expert person.

Heck, I think they're ideal for me. I love sticking one in my pocket, knowing I can yank it out without worrying about it snagging, and then quickly thumb-cocking it for an easy and accurate single-action short-range shot.

Rule # 1: Have a gun

Rule # 2: The best gun in a gun fight is the one you have.

Rule # 3: Shot placement, Shot placement, Shot placement, Shot placement, Shot placement, A hit with a 380 is better than a miss with a 44.

You have gotten a bunch of opinions on here. It’s simple. Are you happy with the Kahr? Can you hit the target reliably under stress?

If the answers to those questions are yes, then you do what you are comfortable with. The Kahr is a good weapon. Do what you want.

I know you asked about the Kahr, but I don't have any experience with that one so...

My Ruger LCP is still in break-in/check-out mode. I've only put 60 rounds through it so far, 25 of Aquila JHP and 35 of Fiocchi FMJ. No hiccups, jams, or failures so far.

The sights are nothing more than bumps on the slide, trigger pull is a long, heavy single action and it's tough to get a comfortable grip on such a small pistol. But, it is what it's supposed to be, an easy to carry/conceal pocket pistol.
For those who've seen the latest American Rifleman, the LCP is a bit smaller than the Taurus they have pictured actual size on the cover.
The target in the picture was shot at 7 yards.

Photobucket
*Not the best photography, but hopefully it'll inspire some good gun porn.

If you are willing to spend what people spend on a Kimber, then the Rohrbaugh 9mm will give you 9mm performance in a package as small as those 380s.
